  1. I appreciate the recommendations for other brands, but I was pretty set on buying something today from Lowe's; I get a discount because my wife works there. Stanley and Lenox were the brands they have in stock. I decided to get the FatMax set and a pair of Lenox offset straight snips: So now I get a chance to compare them on my own. I've never had offset snips before, but I'm hoping they make long cuts easier.

  2. The Beast has arrived! I'll primarily be using this with a clay spade for digging holes to set sign posts in concrete. But nice to also have the capability to drill 1-9/16" holes in concrete and 4" core drill concrete.

  4. Keep an eye on the Skil sets if they aren't on clearance at your store. The lower stocked stores in Tampa have them on clearance, the higher stock has them at regular price. They're replacing the Skil sets and bits with Irwin branded versions of the exact same sets (and single bits) at the same price. The total for my 30-piece set came out to $26.47 plus tax.

  5. I was reorganizing tools today. My wife bought me a rolling tool chest for Xmas and I just got around to putting it in service this weekend. (Long story in its own right.) This got me digging through stuff I haven't touched in ages, and at the bottom of a stack of tool cases I found this: It's a little starter set of USA Craftsman hand tools, looking unused and almost complete save for a few missing sockets. I have NO IDEA where I got these. I would not have bought a set like this; they've been in that stack a long time, but I've got a much fuller set of USA Craftsman that are older than these, and the missing pieces make it unlikely that they're mine. (I don't lose tools like that.) So now I don't know what to do with them. They're all duplicates of things I already have, so I'll never use them. I wish I knew someone just starting out who could use a small set of good tools, but I don't know anyone like that, so I guess I'll just Craigslist them. Seems a shame to sell them without solving the mystery, though.

  6. Today, as mentioned in another thread, I got a Stanley FatMax set of three aviation snips, and a Lenox offset snip, at Lowe's: This is the result of setting up my new rolling tool chest: Technically I got this for Xmas, but I just unboxed it this weekend, so I think it counts. In the process I took a good look at my tool collection and dumped some duplicates at Goodwill. In the process I realized I had been meaning to replace my cheap-ass snips for literally decades, so I finally did it. Some months ago I torqued off a short 3/8" extension, and when I looked closely at it, I realized it wasn't part of my USA Craftsman set at all; it was some el-cheapo thing from one of those crappy $10 socket sets that had mysteriously found its way into my tools. Anyway, fast-forward to yesterday and me going through the sockets, and I realized my 8" extension was probably from the same set; soft crappy steel with scant chroming, just asking for a sudden failure. Nothing can ruin your day quite like breaking a tool in the middle of a project, particularly if it's your own car you're working on and you don't want to walk to the tool store. So into the Goodwill box it went, and I picked these up instead: These are Taiwan-made, not China, which I guess is the best ordinary mortals can do now. I don't have access to a tool-truck guy, so I have to depend on store warranty, and Lowe's doesn't seem like they're going anywhere (as opposed to Sears). They seem nice, actually. The chroming is good and the fit is nice, and they have knurling (unlike my one remaining actual USA Craftsman extension). I don't know if anything else in the retail channel is substantially better, and at least if they fail Lowe's is close by. When I torqued off that cheapie extension I was tightening some lug nuts with a Husky 3/8" torque wrench set to 80ft/lb, and it never clicked. I knew I had to be putting more than 80 on it, but I stupidly kept pushing until the extension broke. So the Husky has to go back to HD, but in the meantime I ran across this on clearance at Lowe's for $79 less my discount: Sorry it's a little blurry. Didn't have my glasses on at the time. That's a 1/2" digital-readout torque wrench, or in other words the correct tool for what I was doing when I broke that extension. Digital-readout for the same price as regular click-type, that's a no-brainer and I grabbed it. Not a bad haul for the weekend.

  8. Those have a lifetime warranty. You should send them in for replacement.

  9. So do you remember a YouTube that Dan and Eric put up a little while ago? It's through Instagram that I get involved with companies and get things here and there, there message is true but it takes a bit of work and more so for a YouTube channel! So I've been doing this for almost a year now, and this is the video I'm referring to: .. It's a lot of fun for me!

  10. Hard to beat benchcrafted stuff. I have their Moxon which is a nice but the major drawback of the threads sticking out. I am pretty sure I am going to outfit my bench with a closes tail vise like Robs current bench. In the first video of this series he shows his previous tail vises and what was wrong with them. Hard to say at this point as I dont see myself doing as much hand tool stuff as he does.

  12. I like the 18v string trimmer also. I like it better now. We moved. At the old house, the trimmer was great, but took a little while to trim the grass. At the new house, the grass must be different. The trimmer does much better. Last night I trimmed alot more than I needed to, just because it was working so well. I have some areas under bushes and tight to get the mower in. It saved time using the trimmer. If the grass gets too high, it bogs down fairly easy. At home, it's great. I even moved my gas weed eater to another property.

  15. Finally able to get some work done this weekend. My wife had surgery this week and I took the week off. Took the plunge and got the legs measured out where I think I want them. Cut them out with a forstner bit, router, and lots of chiseling. They are not perfect by any means but I did get the hickory lines matched up darn near perfect. I also got the stretchers cut, planed, and glued up. Still need to cut them to final length and cut the half laps on them and the legs. I have been looking at bench crafted or wooden vises for the leg vise. I was talking with my father in law and apparently he can make me the screw and nut! I went and bought a piece of tiger maple and am going to glue up pieces of hickory for the hub. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

  16. I thought the same. Also, lots of 1/4" sockets and no 1/4" handle, just a small 3/8" handle and a reducer. I think this kit is intended for a first-time homeowner who has a lot of things to assemble rather than fix; or maybe it's to keep in your trunk for minor roadside repair.

  20. Skil 30-piece router bit set. Check all your local stores by changing the location online, normal cost is $100. I had one locally selling for $77 and one for $37!! https://www.lowes.com/pd/Skil-30-Piece-Router-Bit-Set/1059237 Add something to get your subtotal to $50 then use google and slickdeals to generate your $15 off $50 code.

  22. I still really like the 2.0 half packs on my surge impact, makes it more compact and lasts for long enough if i need to charge up by lunchtime, it's ready again afterwards. That or i grab my second 2.0, i really prefer it this way because it's noticeably lighter on my waist

  23. All depends on what ecosystem of battery. A DeWalt guy will buy a single 20v brushless saw for sure and of course a single FV battery is 54/60 volts! I am a DeWalt guy and was looking forward to the new saws........ but........ I recently started getting some(ok a lot) of Ryobi's odds and ends.

  25. Honestly, the tools are mostly junk but their customer service is pretty darn good...just don't ask them any questions about the product. That was above and beyond, that's just a stellar person.

  28. Got the three sections planed for the last time and cut the lengthy got them at 5'2". Gives me a little extra room and leeway if I need to cut anything off for more squareness. Got lines laid out for biscuits and I'll get this glued up after work! Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

  29. Yea "one time" is deceiving because they bring stuff back. This corner jig is second time around. If their stuff was not so expensive I would probably buy all of it. Cant dispute the quality but some of its just not worth the price.

  30. What took so long for the Planer to hit? I've had mine since May last year...I don't understand Dewalts market strategy at all. They're all over the damn place with tool releases and to whom and when they supply them to retailers. It's as if as each tool is released, Oprah jumps and and starts pointing saying "YOU get a tool, and YOU get a tool...EVERYBODY gets a tool!..." But then points to like 3 or 4 in the audience and says "...except you guys, you ain't getting shit." and drops the mic.
