  1. It's only worthwile being common knowledge if everyone is doing the same thing. Maybe they aren't doing what we would expect. Solid state?
  2. Today I visited the DnM tool show in London, if you have a look @Ned post here: I wanted to make a new thread as the other is dragging on a little after being derailed by usless nonsence. A few things I looked at. As Ned posted, photos of the current cordless X2 mitre saw and the spacing between the two batteries. I did take a tape measure and there's just about 4mm between the two batteries. If you considered future cells well 5mm longer this would consume 5mm between the two batteries unless they could shave .5mm from each side and they theoretically could be used while rubbing cheeks. However I did speak to the uk Rep/Sales Manager, I believe his name is Martin and gave him the tales of speculation and his answer was basically 'where do they dream up these stories' while wearing a right grin, so he obviously isn't letting much go in terms of information on any possible future batteries but as for now they want you to presume it's not happening. It is, and the new tools are evident of this. Also asked the question on 6ah batteries and why they're so hard to get hold of in the UK and the simple answer was, they can't make them fast enough to meet demand but they are due back in the UK before the end of the year so they will be back on shelves. Was surprised to see however, they're currently listed in Makitas new product catalogue at just over £360 each if memory serves which is an absurd figure. They were still sellin BL1830 batteries (no indicator) and fairly cheap so I'd imagine there's a lot of old stock they're trying to clear to at least bring in the 1830B widespread. Also heard that the 36v Rail/Plunge saw will be available in the UK this month.
  3. Realistically, why are you even considering anything lower than a 4ah battery for high drain tools?
  4. Maybe for the US/AUS markets but as for the UK/EU we'll get what we're given and like it.
  5. Do you have any X2 tools? If so what's the gap measure between two current batteries?
  6. I'll be there myself. The DGA900 is already set up for wider batteries.
  7. While it wouldn't be ideal there's every possibility an adaptor or shoe could be offered that will offset the batteries to give a wider spacing. Based on the image I've attached but set up to fit current 18x2 tools.
  8. If I find anything I'll be sure to post it but Makita are very secretive about new things/power source it seems. Personally I'd anticipate something earlier in the coming year.
  9. A friend told me that toolaholic let slip on his story that a 9ah battery is coming. Definitely wider. Possibly 21 or 20700 cells.
  10. Is it about the size of his flexvolt battery pack or his ego? Either way, I bet that's not all he likes to stroke.
  11. Incorrect. I have plenty cordless DeWalt tools, I just choose not to be blinded by the marketing fan boy bull flame wars that go on in forums. If you want to move the goal posts that's fine but I'd rather compare apples to apples. Wait for Makita new batteries if you're going to put the flexvolt battery on a pedestal. This is where you fail. Milwaukee are well known as being thermally flawed on their 9ah packs. This isn't through heat dissipation, this is through heat build up (or lack of) due to high current draw. Perhaps the problem is not with the fact Makita allow a high current draw and inturn get hot but rather that DeWalt do not. The form factor and surface area is pretty much identical for both brands. Without extra surface area and a material that acts as a good conducter of heat, not one or the other will be any better. Have you ever considered that it isn't the brand, rather you and the guys using them? Anyway that's me. If you want to educate yourself further on energy storage there's a wealth of information online.
  12. It's only taken what, 6/7 years for them to think now's perhaps the time for a can cooled charger when batteries approach the 6ah mark. As for this running hot nonsense, I'll bare it in mind. Plastic is an insulator. You can fill it with as much copper foil as you like. I've attached a few images for you to study at your convenience. Ironically out of the three the DeWalt has the smallest (if at all) over load, over discharge and thermal protection circuit.
  13. Armature most likely. Remove the Brushes, take a multimeter if you have one and stick them in the brush holder openings so you make contact at 180deg points with the commutator. Measure resistance. If you see a sudden drop on any pair or 0 you have a short which is definitely a broken armature.
  14. Dewalt don't even use air cooled chargers. The colour of the tool won't alter the science of the cell so believe me when I say a DeWalt battery at its core will be no cooler than any other under the same load.
  15. They were released in the UK Q4 last year. They're not currently old stock. Even with new batteries coming, the current batteries will have to be continued to support 18x2 tools that haven't been designed to accept batteries with a wider body.
  16. It's tied to the BPS device which in turn is controlled by the phone/computer. You can control the BPS device with any other device but it is that which would remain unique to the batteries; or at least that's my understanding.
  17. No, they'll still be available, makita just couldn't produce them fast enough for the UK market. http://www.makitauk.com/accessories/batteries/li-ion/197422-4-battery-bl1860b-18v-li-ion.html
  18. Encryption wouldn't work well. It's easy to lose or break a cell phone as you tend to throw them about and use them all the time. Once that unique encryption key is gone your battery is useless. Having a dedicated single device will have a central point with a lower risk of failure.
  19. New batteries are coming, it's just a case of when. I'd expect to see them on the JPN and AUS markets before anywhere else however. Rumours of 21700 cells being implemented. If makita don't last then none of them last; every brand use one of three cells, samsung, sony or LG.
