I found an Instructables link. This is what I will try after practice with a broken bucket and chair that I have laying around.

I have the opportunity to get the miter saw for free because the handle is cracked. The saw still works. Checking with both Rigid and ereplacementparts.com reveals the upper and lower handle parts have been discontinued and are no longer available. Does anyone know of an alternative source for these parts or a possible repair to the handle parts?
