whats so bad about the head?  push line though hole, and rotate head to wind up the  line.  pretty darn simple.

Sounds like they did change it
To refill the head that came with mine, you had to pop off the housing, wedge two separate lines into two plastic holes on the spool that wore out way too fast, carefully wrap the line, curse profusely when the line turned into a birdsnest, gently coax the two lines out the opposing holes, hold your breath as you put the spool back into the body, curse some more when the lines go everywhere, and then finally half an hour later you might be ready to start trimming again :P

  2. I don't know how well it'd work with the actual tools, but I bought a Dewalt-Makita adapter so I could use my Dewy batteries on the Makita oscillating fan, and it works a treat. From memory I think I read that Dewalt has the circuit protection on the tools as opposed to in the batteries, which could cause an issue if battery drain isn't monitored when using the adapter

  3. My old 985 has some runout, but my newer 796 pleasantly doesn't, even after plenty of hammer action.

Regarding your slipping bits - after the first slip, have you lightly sanded the bit shank? I've found that when a bit slips even with the chuck done up tight, it seems to polish the surface and makes is susceptible to continued slippage, but if you give it a bit of a sand it fixes the issue. A light scape of the jaws of the chuck helps too.

I wonder if the runout on the chuck could be fixed by a quick spin on a lathe, not an option for most but an option nonetheless, may have to check it out if/when I replace the gearbox in my 985

  4. I'm very pleased with the Flexvolt chainsaw, put it through its paces on a recent camping trip.
The chain did come off once, but as luck would have it it only came off after I finished a cut/stopped using it, after that the tension kept up.

  5. Do the eyelets look ok? Another tip I've come across is to soak the line in water overnight if you're having issues with breakage.

Alternatively, you could replace the head. I'd convinced my mum to buy the Flexvolt trimmer for herself (dear old duck was talking about buying a 2-stroke, she's retired with arthritis and that's just a big old nope), today I finally received and swapped out the horrible DeWalt head/spool with a Speed-Feed 350, even casual observation showed it to be a far nicer head compared to the stock offering. Even nicer was that I didn't have to use any of the adapters provided, went straight on.
