rrich1
Hopefully I didn't forget anything. Night stand is epoxied together. I cut the lower runner but haven't attached it yet. rrich1
Chest of drawers is glued up. Up next is picking the lumber for the drawers. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Few more pics of the chest of drawers. Also I mapped out the lumber for all of the drawers. A whole lot of lumber. The walnut piece on the right is just under 13" wide. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Alright...it's been a while since an update. I planed all of the drawer pieces to thickness and rough cut them to length and width. To aid with making the box joints for the front of the drawers I made the ultimate box joint jig by ibuildit.ca. I'll use a band saw to make the cut lines and then use the box joint jig to gog out the waste. Jig works well when you remember to change the height setting between pieces. I'll use a dado stack next time though to go faster. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
First drawer front. Kinda irritated. Somehow my marking gauge must have moved and made my line deeper than it should have been. My test cuts before were perfectly flush. ChrisK
They look good though dude. Are you going to fill them or sand them or leave them in place?
rrich1
They look good though dude. Are you going to fill them or sand them or leave them in place? What I think I am going to do is take a router and use the gap on the front (the space the sides fall short of reaching the front) and then flip the piece over and route the back sides of the drawer front box joints. This will flush up the fronts. Then on the sides I'll glue them up and use a flush trim bit. I got all of the dresser drawers sized today. Aside from the backs being cut to length. I couldn't be happier so far. I will need to fill a spot in the bottom front piece with some epoxy Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk

rrich1
Lot of work done the past two days. I got all of the drawer fronts and sides of the dresser marked out and cut. First the band saw to establish the outer lines of the cut and the the box joint jig to cut the waste out. I didn't get a chance to chisel them out until today. I don't like hammering that late at night. These joints fit PERFECT! A nice snug fit and essentially flush. So much happier with these joints than the joints on the night stand. I also filled some knots and splits in the wood with epoxy. I used clear for the cherry pieces and tinted it black for the walnut piece. Pics of before and after I scraped the epoxy with a card scraper. Today I cut the dados for the backs and trimmed the runner guides to width. My dado stack wasn't quite a 1/2" for the back dado so I used the drum sander to finesse them to the right fit. Having the drum sander for this build has been awesome. rrich1
Dados for the bottoms are routed in. Stopped dad is for the fronts Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Simple fix to a dumb mistake. I managed to move my marking gauge when I did the scribe line on the nightstand drawers. This made the sides short of the face of the fronts. To make this a simple fix I got the depth needed for my router bit from the recess on the front. Then I used a marking gauge to sever the word on the back side. I then took the router and routed out the wood needed to make the sides flush with the front. This worked amazingly well and took no time at all. I also got all of the drawer bottoms cut. I started to sand and sanded all of the interiors of the drawers. rrich1
The last drawer is currently in glue up. I planed and sanded some of the drawer joints. Didn't turn out too bad. I didn't get some of the bottom cherry sides pushed in all the way so there was a decent amount of planing there. Overall happy so far. rrich1
Chest of drawers and night stand update. I planed the case smooth at the joints and then planed the drawer fronts to the case front. I also installed the drawer runners prior to planning the drawer front down. I sanded to 120 so far to give myself a good surface to measure for the drawer pulls. I drilled for those today and installed the pulls for now. Up next is more sanding to 180 or 220. I also need to fix a small chip out on the front rail that occurred when planing. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Everything is sanded and the drawers got sanding sealer put on. I am attempting to fox some tear out on the front top of the chest of drawers. I used a chisel to get it pretty flat. I then glued a piece of scrap wood onto it. That is where it currently is at. I will then chisel it and plane it smooth. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Had to fix some tear out on the top right front joint of the chest of drawers. I chiseled it smooth then glued a patch on. After the glue dried I planed and sanded it smooth. While not a perfect repair job it is definitely better than missing wood. Today I also put sanding sealer on the night stand and chest of drawers. All that's left is to sand it and apply the coats of finish. I am going to spray them with general finishes Enduro var. It's a water based poly that is supposed to give the appearance of an oil based poly. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Makeshift spray booth. I used the rails of the garage doors for the spray booth. It worked out really well using spring clamps. I initially tried to spray general finishes Enduro var but then I realized the can says to not use on sanding sealer. [emoji17]. Luckily this was my first time spraying with the Fuji semi pro 2 hvlp and I only started on the bottom side of one drawer. After deciding it wouldn't work, I switched to arm r seal. This worked much better. I applied a coat to one drawer, the chest of drawers, and the nightstand. If I was thinking I could have done another drawer. Oh well. I definitely preferred the Enduro var to the arm r seal for spraying...mist wise. The Enduro var was just cleaner. The arm r seal sprayed great but just messier overall. I do have some runs that will hopefully sand out but we shall see. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Guess who put the last coat of poly on today? That's right...this guy! Soooo close! Will wet sand and wax this weekend. Still need to shampoo the floor before moving the furniture in anyways. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
rrich1
Finished! Three coats of arm r seal (2 semi gloss and 1 satin). Finished by wet sanding with 600 grit and buffed with paste wax and 0000 steel wool. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
