  1. in Aus its not much more than competing models (i.e. Brushless, 3 mode Bosch).

I can't see it blowing away the competition (how do they decide the capacity?  Bosch says 3/4", does the Makita do 1" in the same time?)

  2. i dont believe it, it has to be a typo. my 9-1/4" electric Makita can't make it through 3".

half of a 7-1/4" blade is still less than 4", and that doesn't take the arbor into account, or the fact that the blade isn't mounted to the base plate.

  3. thanks for the love guys.

not sure how us 'Aussies' came to abbreviate Australia to Oz ... We are seriously bad like that (shortening everything).

My mate is Mike, he lives down the road from me and until recently ran the tool dept. of the local hardware store for 9(?) years. He does a lot of tool repairs and such so knows his stuff. He's been watching some TIA recently, since I sent him a link, I'll see if he wants to join the forum. Not sure if he's into forums actually ...

  4. Hey folks,

After some inspiration from Dan and Eric, and now Javier as well, a mate and I have started making some tool review videos - Oz Tool Talk.

    https://www.youtube.com/user/OZToolTalk

Our first video (actually a five part series) is comparing Bosch, Dewalt and Makita 18V platforms.

Even if this doesn't interest you, we'd love to get some comments and feedback. And of course, if you'd like to subscribe, all the better!

    Cheers,

    Dwain

  5. i might have believed this test had the tester newly opened both packages in front of the camera. who knows what kind of tampering he did to the bits, for example he could have easily removed the temper or hardness of the steel with a regular flame torch.

actually kind of a ridiculous notion. any test could be fabricated, even a video with unboxing included. quite apart from that, if a review in post form (like this) was going to be tampered with, they would just lie about the numbers!

  6. The Dewalt compact impact just has slightly better spec's than the M12 Fuel  it has 1400 inch pounds of torque and 2,800 rpm but its a much larger tool. It depends on what you really want.

I'm getting confused here, why is the term 'compact' being used?

also, surely no 12V (even the FUEL) is really going to be close in real world performance to a great 18v impact like any of Dewalts 20V impacts? The DCF895 drove the same amount of lags in the same time as the 18V FUEL in the TIA tool fight, and there's not a great deal of difference in power with the 885...

  7. agreed with above, impact is supreme for most screwing applications. I recently had to switch to a drill because my 886 kept shearing 12G roofing screws going into gal posts!

if i was using a drill for putting in Phillips head screws, i would certainly avoid the 985 if at all possible! Since getting a 12V screwdriver, my impact gets much less use too, so much more control without the impact/ratcheting motion for delicate work.

I still prefer the dcd985 over the 995.

isn't the 995 more powerful, shorter and lighter? how many people really care about the mode selector switch? why would you use such a large drill to drive screws?

  9. I find sets, but can't figure out if they ship international or not.

What about the Dewalt ratcheting combos? They are very similar to the Blackhawks, they feature the ASD open end like Proto, they have the lifetime warranty, and they are Taiwan made instead of China. You can find an 11 piece reversible metric set in the price range you're looking for as well.

I think that might be the way to go.

DEWALT DWMT72168 is the model # you're looking for.

I bet truth be told they are New Tools/Hi-Five just like Blackhawk.

thanks Conductor, ill look into them! I have recently signed up to have a 'virtual' US address, which is why the generous TIA guys are going to send me something (as a guinea pig). so I don't have to buy from somewhere that sells internationally.
