I'm converting my 11'x27' single car garage into a work shop and figured I'd document the process. There are several problems with the garage including a general lack of electrical outlets, zero 240v outlets, no insulation, a standard lightbulb instead of strip lights, and a roll down garage door that is very old and needs to be removed since the front of the garage was framed up with a standard door in front of the roll down one. Alternatively the roll down door could be replaced, a garage door opener installed, and the front of the house updated to remove the standard man door. The first thing I need to do is get it cleaned out completely and see about the garage door. It's in the way of doing anything with the ceiling and makes the front end of the garage seem cramped because it's overhead. I think the easiest and cheapest option is going to be to just remove it and maybe down the line have the garage updated to remove the man door and install a new roll down door. When I get around to the electrical I'll install a box so that an opener can be used if a new door is installed in the future so it's one less thing to do. There is a wood burning stove that has not been used in at least 20 years, the roof was replaced about 10 years ago and the chimney was removed from the roof, however it still runs through the garage ceiling (attic floor) and is attached to the stove, so that's something to figure out as well. I definitely want to remove it completely because it takes up so much space and isn't usable. The goal this week is to get anything that can go to the dump either gone or at least organized so it can go. Anything that has to be dealt with in a specific way and can't go to the dump will have to be figured out once I know exactly what I have.

Bought the final few tools I wanted/needed today. Ordered two Milwaukee M18 Rover Mounting Flood Lights from Acme to help light up the garage shop. In the spring spring I'll get around to installing some better lights after I figure out how to get rid of an overhead garage door. Also waited up for the Lee Valley cyber Monday sale and found nothing marked down enough for me to jump on. Instead I picked up an imperial micro-adjust wheel marking gauge.

Oh. That's called me completely forgetting about it because I didn't actually need a drill press.

I just ordered it Wednesday from Amazon and chose the free shipping (5-8 days) since I don't have prime. I'm actually surprised it showed up on a Sunday.

Reviving this post because the drill press arrived today. I haven’t had a chance to unbox it, but it’s a little smaller than I expected based on the box. It’s the perfect size for what I currently need but if or wen I need something bigger I’m probably going with a floor standing model. I have to build a work bench and then it and the ryobi band saw are going to share the bottom shelf so I can access them wen needed and not dedicate a table to each.

I think the main limitations fall on CFM, if the compressor doesn’t produce enough for the tool to run then you need a bigger compressor or a smaller tool. At least this is my understanding, I don’t use a lot of air tools and only have a small 2 gallon compressor for inflating purposes and small finish nailers.

What kind of hand tools are you specifically looking to get him? Are you looking for saws, planes, chisels? What kind of work/projects does he do?

Actually I only went with the A2 because their “tech” info page seemed to just cover O1 and A2 when I originally looked at it on the shoulder planes. A2 keeps an edge longer than the O1 so it made the most sense of those two. It looks like the apron blade tech page does mention the PM-V11 and after looking into it now I probably should have got it. I’ll probably order a PM-V11 blade for it next time I order something.

Ordered the Dewalt Portable Power Station since ToolUp had it for $199 bare tool last night, a Bahco scraper, and a Veritas apron plane with an A2 blade.

Ok, well there was no way I was getting it if it involved driving all the way to MN for it. ToolUp seems to be the only online retailer with that deal, everyone else has it for $299, $399, or even $457.

You say this and then don't mention where it's being sold at this price! After checking everywhere I finally found it on ToolUp at that price and ordered one.

Decided to go with a Bahco scraper instead of the cabinet scraper after looking up some maintenance and use videos. Looks like it'll be more useful.

Yeah, sorry I meant that my decision between the miniature one and the full size one hadn't been 100% decided on. The fact that the cabinet scraper has handles and looks less intimidating to me is my main reason for considering it over the card scraper. I've never used a card scraper and messing up a piece is something that I'm worried about. I've got a box that I'm going to be doing an inlay in for a Christmas present, the straight bit for my router does a fairly decent job with dado's but I want to make sure it's nice and flat.

My thinking behind the mini planes are that the shoulder plane would be perfect for the sized dado's I need to make for an upcoming project. The cabinet scraper I'm less set on since it's only available in one large size and it's only $30 more, I'm going to sleep on it and see how I feel about the idea tomorrow.

I've heard of Lee Valley and Veritas over the last couple of years following woodworkers on Instagram and Youtube but only decided to look at the website today. Holy crap their planes are expensive, I'm sure they are well worth the money but it's very easy to end up in the quadruple digits. Anyone own any Veritas planes? Which ones? Do you find yourself using them more than you thought you would? I'm going to pick up the miniature shoulder plane and miniature cabinet scraper or maybe the full size cabinet scraper, since it's an inexpensive way to get started and I think they'll be the most helpful for now.

Toolpig over on Instagram just got one of their jointers earlier this month and it seems to work really well. I've got my eye on one of their 6" spiral head models. I haven't seen the planer in action but took a gamble on it after seeing the jointer.

The early bird gets the worm, or in this case the planer. Bought a Cutech planer as a starter one, went with straight knives over the spiral head because it was the cheapest model and they have a Thanksgiving deal that makes it only $199 with free shipping. Figured for a 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the Dewalt ones it was worth a shot.

Not the deal of the day, but figured it didn’t warrant a new post. Their 20% off deal for Black Friday started today.

Ordered early Christmas and birthday gifts for myself mainly so I can save some money, make some Christmas gifts for family members, and because I wanted to. I ordered a DW745S table saw with stand from Home Depot for $299. It was between this and the Flexvolt; saving some money, getting a stand, and a larger blade were the deciding factors. That plus I was worried they'd announce a 10" Flexvolt next year and it would annoy me that I didn't wait. Also ordered an Empire 7 in. laser etched rafter square and 4 sets of Bessey H-Style 1/2" pipe clamp fixtures from there. About a year ago I posted about the Wen 8" drill press, and I finally bought it today for $67.79 on Amazon instead of the $72 it was a year ago. Also ordered some toggle clamps since those inexpensive ones from eBay were tiny as hell, a digital angle gauge, some Abranet sanding discs, an Irwin die stock and 1/2"-14 NPT die for threading the pipe for the pipe clamps. Last thing picked up today was a Kreg Precision Setup Bars set so I can setup the table saw and my routers for more accurate usage.

I may be remembering incorrectly, I thought there were some major bubble issues but all I can find are these couple of posts from Toolaholic about it and it doesn’t seem that bad. Still a level shouldn’t be doing what his is, but it’s nowhere near as off as I recalled it being.

I've seen this same issue posted before on Instagram, I'm staying far away from milwaukee levels because of it and because the "redstick" ones are much more expensive than a comparable Empire model. You'd think with TTI owning Empire they'd be consistent in the manufacturing. I've never seen this issue pop up on a Empire level.

I have one, I basically only use it for threaded rod. It's nice and compact, cuts rod really easily and cleanly.

1/2” Fuel Ratchet kit I won from Workshop Addict’s October giveaway showed up today. This ratchet is heavy and longer than it looks in photos/videos. Now to decide if this stays in it’s bag or into a TSTAK and with what.
