I am all for X3 / X4 formula, if it is restricted to stationary / wheeled / backpack type of tools. Very welcomed idea actually. Btw has anyone noticed the rough surface finish of the saw on the video? Must be a 3D-printed prototype.😯

Evolution of "The Gap" seems to support this theory. I would love myself some HD batteries, but not in Flexvolt form factor. Not at that price. I'd rather wait 2 more years for more compact ones, if that's what's needed. I'm completely with SchenzenSpecial on this, "keep it compact" is my top priority. However, I 'm not a pro and I' m not a salesman either.

Thanks for measuring! Then it's either very compact 21700 packs, or they really have something revolutionary up their sleeve. Eiter way I'm a happy camper 😛. Btw Dominic, do you have clear favorite between X2 and single battery brushless chainsaws? I can't make up my mind which to get.

Maybe they really managed to cramp 21700 cells into a pack that is only 5 mm wider? For me as a Makita user that would be a dream come true. With other brands, hi-drain packs tend to be hideously big, more than shere difference in cell dimensions would imply. Except for perhaps Bosch Core, which is pretty compact. If that is the case, it would explain why the latest circ saw has narrower gap. 5 - 6 mm would do.

Like what, 2 mm wider? Why do all the newer X2 tools have like 2 cm gap between the packs then? Except the latest circular saw, where the spacing between the packs seem to be back to a couple of milimeters. I'm just intrigued what this inconsistency could possibly mean.🤔

Latest single battery chain saw doesn't seem to have enough space for a bigger battery pack. Also the not yet released X2 circ saw is back to "regular" spacing between the packs. (I checked all vids and pics available and I swear there is no gap). Could this mean Makita will stick with its regular sized packs in the future and avoid this "the bigger the better" nonsense? Just a speculation, but could this mean Makita will skip 20700/21700 cells altogether and come up with something even better? Something that will keep up with performance, but won't grow in size. Time for Solid state batteries?

For compatibility sake, I'd like to see a backpack holder for say 8 pieces of existing 18V Makita packs with built-in slow charger for overnight charging and the necessary electronics making it ready for powering Makita tools of any given voltage. Would something like that be doable?
