The reason can be deeper than switch, inside of a drill. If you want to repair it for yourself, you should open it up, and look carefuuly for any visible damages. If you don't see any I would recommend you to go to warranty service or technical center.

You just need to find out what is the smell source. Until you change it nothing will help you. The reason can be in old tubing, I had it in my father's house. After changing we don't have any smell and issues.

I think that butt joint will fit you better. It's lasting and will last you for long. Don't worry about not having right size, it happens.
