Maybe when i buy a house instead of rent I'll fulfill that hobby. Like the trees all around the house for seclusion. That's the way to go. I was in my teens at the time and had fun messing with it too. That stopped for a few years while I was racing cars and chasing tail. In the mid 80s after being married a few years I decided to get another CB. One of CB guys I knew got his amateur license and I thought if he could do it, I could too. So I took a class and passed my Novice test. Back in the "old days" there were five licenses. 5 words per minute (WPM) morse code copy was required to pass your first (novice test) along with a theory test.The next technician license was theory only, the general license was next and required 13 WPM and another theory test. The next license was theory only and is the license I received within 6 months of starting and kept for 30 years. The top class was Extra Class which originally required a theory test and 20 WPM code test. They have since dropped the requirement to copy morse code and there are now only three licenses to take. I was bored a couple years ago and went and took my test for Extra Class license. Really did not need it but gives me some extra privileges and just wanted to accomplish that. rrmccabe Posted February 4, 2017 Author Report Share Posted February 4, 2017 Well I have spent 30 years in the city so this is a new venture and like you I could not go back. We enjoy the privacy and the wildlife. Its been quite an adventure. We bought the land about 8 years ago and hired an excavator to come in and regrade the creek banks and install a 60' long culvert so we could have a drive over the creek. I cut down about 50 trees and had him uproot what was left and we burned all of it. I did all the AutoCAD work for the house plans and then general contacted the projects hiring the major trades. We hung cabinets, did all the tile work, custom built cable railings for the stairs, installed electrical and plumbing fixtures and well as lighting, switches and receptacles. Built two decks (one more to go). It worked out well but would never do it again. I just dont have it in me! Here is a picture from the street when I bought it. When I'm not working, fiddling in my shop, or wrangling kids, I coach youth sports and make all the other wives jealous with my handyman abilities and movie star good looks. rrmccabe Posted February 4, 2017 Author Report Share Posted February 4, 2017 Thanks guys. The railing was the easy part for me. The slate wrapped treads had me hating life. I only wish I had started drawing in 3D before building them. At that time I was working in AutoCAD 2D so the design work was a lot harder. I have a lot of hobbies, has I like to learn new things, and I try to incorporate the different hobbies in with each other. My hobbies include, woodworking, scroll sawing, woodturning, model railroading, creating dioramas, building model kits, slot cars, geocaching, and going trackside to watch and take pictures of real trains, Shortwave and Scanner Listening. I also have a General Class Amateur Radio License. I added 20 different varieties of fig trees, 5 australian finger limes, 2 Yuzu lemons 1 myer lemon etc. I also put in a bunch of raised beds for growing veggies.
