Great question.  I had the same issue with the gas string trimmer and it turned out my motor was bad.  Not saying that is what happened with yours.  If there a compression button on your motor?  Not sure if the small motors have that but check as that could be an issue.  If it does, just depress the compression button and it will be easy to pull.

Yeah, that is weird.  It shouldn't be that hard to start.  The only thing I can think of is the issue I had with their small engine when the engine was bad.  I ended up returning it to HD and getting a new one, then it worked fine.  It was very easy to pull and started within one or two pulls.
