Makita BTD141 impact driver issues

I have this driver that has been part of

my fleet for years. It’s been a reliable backup for probably close to 10 years, but has recently developed an issue where pulling the trigger results in a number of possibilities. 1) nothing but the light comes on  2) it turns but only at a reduced and somewhat arbitrary speed, 3) it runs just fine but the clutching mechanism seems to have stopped working. if it doesn’t run you can usually bump it and it will start back up. It doesn’t matter if it’s running clockwise or counterclockwise.

It appears you can get any replacement part for this driver at reasonable costs, and I’d almost prefer to fix it than buy a newer one. Yes, I know new ones are only $65 but I hate throwing fixable things away.

Any suggestions on what the issue might be? Thanks!
