Aftershock66
Have an old 5 tier galvanized steel shelf rack in the shed. Was wanting to use my new flux core welder to make a decent welding table. Thinking about welding 4 shelves together, each shelf is 24"x 48" about 3/16 thickness. Completely coated with galvanizing. Should I disk grind the galvanized coating off or just leave it as is for a welding table?
Tortuga
I'm not a welder but I've heard of galvanize poisoning from welding galvanized steel.
Eric - TIA
Someone will chime in. I don't know enough to give advice on this topic.
DR99
Just a quick Google search mentions a ton of health issues with welding galvanized steel.
regopit
Never weld on galvanized. If you decide to try to grind it off get the best respirator you can find and it fits properly.
DR99
Same thing with using brake clean to clean and de-grease metal. The UV light from welding breaks the chemicals down to phosgene gas which was a chemical weapon they used during WW1.
Altan
I have seen a DeWALT welding bench only in some Greek websites. it looks quite good.

That's only chlorinated brake clean and argon, but never trust the label...brake clean and welding are a no-no. The zinc in galvanizing is not good for your health at all (poisons you but basically makes you feel like you have the flu) and grinding it off will just make a mess of the surface. I'd honestly just grab a piece of plate steel to put on top, even 1/8-3/16" thick will work.
