The technology is interesting, but I can't really think of what I would use one for.

I have the same issue, but I think it's one of those things where once I had it, I'd find 100 uses for it.

Just think of the possibilities for those innovative type individuals. You can make parts and modifications for tools. Copy one manufacturers part and make it compatible with your go to brand. You could also make replacement parts.

I just read earlier where NASA emailed a ratchet to the space station where it was printed on a 3D printer and used.

I completely re did all of the electronics and added a new mk8 extruder on a BFB3000. It works as good as any makerbot. If i were to buy a printer I would go with an ultimaker 2 or the ultimaker original+. They beat the maker bots on almost every level and they are only a fraction of the price while still maintaining the print area of the same size

3D printers are really helping with prosthetics. Before it was really expensive to get something custom manufactured and machined. Now, the material is very cheap and a slight adjustment in a CAD program can pump out new revisions quickly.
