RickyMcGrath Posted December 21, 2014 Report Posted December 21, 2014 I broke down and bought the DeWalt Tap & Die sets a few weeks ago. I've used them a few times and they're not much different than any other. The problem I see in the not so distant future is storage. I Carefully cut open the plastic so I could reuse them but I need a better solution. Nicely laid out and organized. Any ideas?
DR99 Posted December 21, 2014 Report Posted December 21, 2014 I didn't even know Dewalt made tap and die sets. Hrmm, The only thing i can think of is a small case that drill bits come in and foam with cut outs for all the pieces. That's the only solution I see as being practical its kinda crappy that Dewalt didn't ship it with a case.
chadlanthier Posted December 21, 2014 Report Posted December 21, 2014 Was not aware they made one either
RickyMcGrath Posted December 21, 2014 Author Report Posted December 21, 2014 Home Depot carries them. They have three small sets. A small & large SAE and a small Metric.
Trim guy Posted December 21, 2014 Report Posted December 21, 2014 I have 2 sets of the small sizes and yes the tools themselves work fine. But storage is definitely an issue.
RickyMcGrath Posted December 21, 2014 Author Report Posted December 21, 2014 It's a tough one.... I've found empty cases online but not sure of sizes they accommodate or if it will fit all the pieces I have.
Fazzman Posted December 21, 2014 Report Posted December 21, 2014 They make tap indexes similar to drill indexes. They can usually found at Enco for like $12. They wont hold your dies unfortunately
snohiker Posted April 7, 2015 Report Posted April 7, 2015 yea I saw them as well and the fact they didn't have a case is the reason there still on the shelf at HD I now ide loose them
Sarbatche Posted April 18, 2015 Report Posted April 18, 2015 Don't go putting those new taps into foam. You won't ruin them but you will be picking out foam bits from the sharp edges constantly. I know that y'all have a collection of tools, including routers. You could make a wooden case pretty easily. The machine shop that I used to work in used individual tool cases that were then nestled into foam. I prefer Kaizen foam and the DeWalt Tough System DS150 to keep moisture away from those bare steel tools. 1
Nordraw Posted April 18, 2015 Report Posted April 18, 2015 Make or buy a box and get some Kaizen foam from a company called "fastcap" they have great videos showing how to do it. That way you custom make it to exactly what you need. And have fun doing it too. Good luck.
RickyMcGrath Posted April 23, 2015 Author Report Posted April 23, 2015 Black and yellow foam... Sweet. A little pricey though. May have to stick with black and white. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008CS7Z7I/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?qid=1429812354&sr=8-13π=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70&keywords=kaizen+foam
