  1. One time my brother (probably 17 years old and mechanically clueless) changed the oil in dads f-150. Except he didn't know what he was doing and pulled the plug on the front differential instead of the oil pan! Then he proceeded to fill the engine up with the number of quarts it called for and it got driven like that for 2 weeks! I forget how we found out about it, but amazingly, no permanent damage was done, and he later bought the truck and still running today (this was probably 10 years ago when he did that)

Also that's an astronomical price for oil change.

Oh wow. That's story is a bit of a worry! How did he manage to confuse the oil sump with a front diff? That's amazing no damage was done, thankfully.

The price is high for a couple of reasons:

With diesel cars fitted with DPFs (diesel particulate filters) they require low SAPS oil to reduce ash build-up in the DPF. Also, VW stipulates their own oil approval rating (VW 504.00/507.00) which is of course more expensive than your everyday basic full-synthetic oil. And you can't use conventional (mineral) oil in these things.

Oh, and 'because Australia' where everything is more expensive for absolutely no reason. Sigh.

  2. I know this won't apply to many of you as this car and the engine in it won't be found in the US, but nonetheless I know some of you will be interested anyway lol.

So a few weeks ago I did an oil change service on the Polo, and thought I’d throw together a video showing how I did it. I finally got around to editing and uploading it last night, and am sharing it with you here in case it is of any use to anyone. The video is not ridiculously in-depth, in that I don’t stand in front of the camera for hours telling you what to do — I just point the camera in the right places and show you every step in the service — and the video runs for under 10 minutes.

The whole job takes about 30 minutes, with the most annoying part being removing and re-installing the lower engine cover. Everything else is really very simple and easy to do.

    Parts Used*

-Febi Bilstein Oil Drain Plug with Seal A$5.12

    -Wix-Filtron WL7476 Oil Filter A$9.05

    -Liqui-Moly Mos2 Additive (Optional) A$17.69

-Shell Helix Ultra ECT 5W-30 (VW 504.00/507.00) A$78.88

    Total Parts Cost: A$110.74

*all prices are from micksgarage.com except the oil and Mos2 (both from SuperCheap Auto)

  3. I used to use Meguairs stuff for my cars but recently switched to an Australian car care company that make kickass products. They're called Bowden's Own, and IMO their stuff is better than anything from Megs that I've used and the price is similar, but I'm supporting jobs in my country and I just like the products more.

The names they come up with for their products are hilarious too. Super Aussie.

At the moment I've got their Auto Body Gel, Auto Body Wax, Auto Body Cleanser, Wheely Clean, Tyre Sheen, Leather Love, Leather Guard, Naked Glass, Vinyl Care and Fabra Cadabra (lol what a name!) as well as lots of microfibre towels and applicator pads for interior and exterior.

Some other stuff they make with funny names include:

    Bugger Off bug remover

    The Drop Bear microfibre cloth

    Agent Orange degreaser

    Snow Job snow foam cleaner

    Fully Slick detailer spray

    Big Softie microfibre towels

    Muffy Sponge

    Super Bloody Huge Chamois

    Dirty Deeds black microfibre towels

Their stuff is good, but like even if it wasn't I'd buy it just because the names are hilarious. And it's pretty cool when you call their freecall number and the owner of the company answers!

  4. Glad to see it worked out for you!

    Thanks, I'm very glad too.

Glad to hear that since I just bought their Trimmer last week on sale at Home Depot.

I'm sure they do a better job at customer service in the USA anyway. Us Aussies have a tendency of being screwed over by big companies.

That reminds me, the Ego 12" weed eater has been marked down at HD at some stores to as low as $35! At my HD last I checked it was $90. If you're interested, go to the computer in the front by customer service, click on the price check app and type in "Ego" and you'll see the price and inventory at that store.

    Wow that's an amazing price!

Welcome, glad to have you as part of the crew. You have come to the right place.

Awesome to be able to be here with you guys.

Welcome to the crew Alex man you have a ton of OPE equipment!! I want to get a cheap lawn tractor now with a plow blade I'm getting tired of pushing a snow blower around the neighborhood. I do the snow for the seniors around me.

Haha yeah when you live on a farm you need a tonne of OPE! I can't really help you with snow blowers sorry - it's never snowed where I live.

Welcome aboard Alex! You gotta talk to Dwain, I think he needs a back up on the video channel with his friend moving :)

Ah does he now? Thanks for the welcome.
  6. It's sad that publicly shaming a company is the only way u get good customer service though. I'm glad everything worked out in the end.

This is a big issue, but highlights the positives of social media! Yes, they should have done the right thing in the first place (fixed the unit) but when that didn't work out, Facebook came to the rescue and my issue was resolved very very quickly.

  7. I bought an EGO hedge trimmer back in November 2014 when they first came out in Australia, thanks mainly to the positivity towards the products on Tools In Action.

I loved the hedge trimmer and used it extensively on my property, and considered buying more EGO tools. However, after a few months the unit started acting up, with it cutting out randomly. I contacted support and they organised for the unit to be dropped off at a repairer, however the repairer could not diagnose the issue. I took the unit back home and continued using it, but now it began to excessively vibrate - not fun. I contacted support again and they asked me to take the unit to another repairer, 40 mins drive from my house - not happy about that. This was six weeks ago now, and the unit is STILL there, and they still cannot diagnose the issue. Useless.

How did I fix this? I complained to their Facebook page, and lo and behold, I got a call from a senior exec that day, with him apologising profusely and offering a full replacement of the trimmer, as well as a rapid charger thrown in. Wow!

Well, the replacement arrived today, and what can I say! A brand new hedge trimmer, a rapid charger, a standard charger and two 2.0Ah batteries thrown in, as well as three EGO baseball caps and three EGO beanies. They really went above and beyond trying to help me out.

These guys may not have impressed me initially with their customer support, but they tried very hard to make things right. So, thank you EGO for your help and I am once again excited about this pioneering brand.

Can't wait to clean up my hedges again - they're looking a little scrappy after six weeks of not having the trimmer haha.

    Alex.

  8. Hey guys, I'm Alex and I live downunder in Australia.

I live on a few acres of land which keeps me busy and means I make good use of a variety of tools and get to test them out under pretty tough, real-world conditions.

    I've currently got:

-Honda UMK425U 4-stroke brushcutter (line trimmer)

    -Honda HHB25 4-stroke leaf blower

    -Honda HRU197 19" 4-stroke lawn mower

    -Honda FG110 4-stroke mini-tiller

-Karcher G 2500 DCE 2500PSI petrol pressure washer

    -Husqvarna 340 chainsaw

-EGO HT2400E 56-volt hedge trimmer with two 2.0Ah batteries and a quick charger

    -Simplicity 2350 50" lawn tractor with Vanguard 23HP V-twin

    -Bosch GDX 18 V-EC (IDH182) Impact wrench/driver

    -Bosch GKS 235 circular saw

-Karcher WD 3.330 M shop vac

and a few other tools which I don't use very often

I've been a big fan of TIA for ages but am only just joining the forum now and hope to make good use of it.

    So, hello everyone!

    Cheers,

    Alex.
