  1. Hello,

I'm looking for a cordless jigsaw. I already have the Milwaukee m18 and m12 and Dewalt 20v battery platforms and would like to stick with them.

It will be used by me and my wife for simple woodworking chores.

    Any suggestions?

    thanks,

    John

  2. I'm getting that much closer to wiring my new shop. I bought the wire strippers recommended by the crew.

Now my question is, does anybody use the combination screwdrivers for their wiring projects?

I've seen some reviews about the Klein and Ideal models, but was wondering if anyone had any real world experience.

    Thanks,

    John

  3. Sorry I should have replied yesterday.

Toolbarn was having a BOGO on the Milwaukee part number that Sparky recommended, so I ordered them and another pair of regular strippers. So now I will be elbow deep in stripers!

    thanks for the replies.

  4. The title does not say it all!

I'm looking for recommendations on wire strippers.

I'm going to do the wiring in a pole barn shop that I'm going to have built this winter and would like a recommendation on a good set of wire strippers for the romex.

Any other tools that I need to do the wiring job for the shop?

I will have an electrician set the service and check out all of my work, but I can handle hanging boxes, pulling wires and doing the connections.

    thanks,

    John

  5. Thanks, yes it is a cool build.

The house belongs to the in-laws. They built it back in 1977 and the flat roof had been replaced three times, so this time they inclosed it to make a new room. A 1,600 sq ft room.

The flat roof was originally designed to square dance on, but I don't think they ever did for fear of making it leak, which it did anyway.

New floor trusses, 2x6 walls, closed cell foam insulation and pine car siding.  We have a big family and it will be well used during parties.

Would love to see the addition as we are about to go through on also.  I agree with the Home Depot then they can get what they want.  However Leatherman does rock.

    Eric,

Rather than try to upload a bunch of pictures, I am going to link the Facebook page of the builder.  They are doing a great job and have documented the build pretty well.

We had a flat roof over top an indoor pool that my father in law had built to rehab after his first major heart attack. The roof over this area has been replaced three times. So this time it was decided to put an addition over.

The house had the original wood shakes from when it was built in 1977. So we had it re-shingled as part of the addition.

They are doing other projects at the same time, if you go to the picture of the truck load of ceiling trusses you can follow the progress.

The exterior paint was completed today and the interior is to be done this week. We are on the home stretch.

  7. There are some good ideas.

I understand the gift card idea, but was thinking something they could use and remember as a gift. I agree, hard workers are hard to come by and deserve a tip as much as a waiters.

I did plan on doing a burger cookout on their last day, if I can get them to sit still long enough.

I will get some pictures of the job up soon, hopefully.

    Keep the suggestions coming.

    Thanks

  8. Hello,

We're having a major addition to the house done and the main part of the crew is three young guys, mid twenties.

We are thinking of buying them something as a kind of a tip / thank you for a job well done. Good workers, polite and doing a good job.

The each seem to be well outfitted with tools, they're using Stiletto hammers, decent tape measures, etc.

I would like to get each of them a tool. Any suggestions on something in the $50 - $100 range each?

    Thanks,

    John

  9. I doubt I will need it to do anything real heavy. I have a big old Miller stick machine if need be. It was my Father in laws and I need to clean it up, but I'm sure it works fine.

I need to get off the fence and do something in the next couple of days before the promo runs out.

They hold their value pretty well so if I don't like it, which I'm sure I will, I could get most of my money back.

    thanks all,

    John

I can't remeber the exact amount. I know it wasn't a huge percentage but better then nothing. It was a few years ago so who knows if it's still even offered.

Airgas is great for welding stuff, but there not the cheapest. There's a lot of online stores cheaper for general supplies. However gloves an jackets it helps to try on first.

Some advice on what stuff to buy/bring...

My local community college had the required tools but I brought my own an then some. It is really convient an saves lots of time. I think that's one of the many things that helped me succeed.

I have heard some schools don't let you bring your own tools, cause it could be a weapon. Make sure your allowed to before doing so. My school let me bring it in the welding building, no were else.

I brought 2 backpacks an a small metal toolbox to class. Small backpacks so they fit in locker. Small Metal toolbox to bring into booth with my tools needed. Always good to keep extra clothes in car as well.

In no particular order my bags had the following

    -textbooks/notebooks

    -conversion/reference charts

    -blank paper, graph paper

-pens multiple colors, highlighters multiple colors, pencil, mini stapler/paperclips, small scissors

    -clear saftey glasses, 2 pairs

    -welding goggles shade 5

-welding helmelt, digital auto darkening multiple shade

-extra lenses for helmet an goggles

    -extra batteries for helmet

-2 pairs of gloves for each process

    -General handling gloves

    -welding jacket

    -multiple soapstone

    -sharpies multiple colors

    -tape measure

    -metal speed square

    -metal thickness guage

    -chipping hammer

    -ball pein hammer

    -mig pliers

    -locking pliers

    -tounge an groove pliers

    -side cutters

    -punch an chisel

I could be forgetting something as well.

It's a lot of stuff. Some people laughed at me being over prepared. I just would rather be prepared an ready. Can't tell you how many people failed partly because they were unprepared. I am usually not a neat person but it helps to be organized, expecially when turning stuff in.

Great list. I have most of that stuff already so it won't be any trouble to gather it up and put it a backpack.

    thanks

    John

I haven't specifically heard of electrical tool manufactures doing discounts. I haven't really paid attention to it so I don't know for sure. Perhaps check with local independent dealers as well as manufactures.

When I lived in the Chicagoland area I went to berlands house of tools(local supply). I asked about a discount even thoe I was buying stuff either way. The cashier said no but called over the manager. The manager looked st me asked were an what classes. He didn't say anything but typed something in register an total went down 15.00 bucks. I have a feeling that's not policy but I wasn't gonna complain.

I know airgas does a discount with student discount, but they don't have electrical tools.

Any idea what the Airgas discount might be?

I'm starting a mig welding class soon.

  12. I'm considering buying a Miller Multimatic 215 before the end of year rebate goes away.

Going to use as a hobby unit and around the farm.

Any pros or cons I need to consider?

FYI - I'm also starting a mig course at the local community college.

    thanks

    John
