  1. Hey everyone.  Sorry I haven't added to this in quite a while.  Summer got super busy and the garage is about half finished. I have an 8 foot table that I've started and need to finish in the next couple weeks.  After that, I'm all in on the garage project.

One update I will share though.  The 8-foot by 8-foot storage cabinet had to be cut down to a smaller width.  I forgot to look up when I was making them.  I have an attic access ladder that when dropped down into place landed right in the cabinet.  Needless to say, there was quite a bit of swearing that day.  It's all good now.

I didn't know old plaster had Asbestos until about 2 months ago.  Your probably good if it was put in 2000's or later.

Can wait to see the garage. If it is anything like your woodworking then I am sure it will be excellent.

The house was built in 1960, so I am sure there is a good chance it had asbestos.

I'm trying to take extra care in this garage facelift.  I want to do it right the first time and not have to redo it for many years.

@tugnut1 Does the plaster have Asbestos?

Wow!  I never thought to check.  I would get it checked, but i never thought about it and the painting portion is done.  I will try to get progress pictures up here in the next couple days.

  4. Hey guys,

I just started a garage makeover project.

We've lived in this house for the last 11 years, and I never properly set up the garage.  It was fist a dumping ground of stuff until we got moved in.  After that, I just tried to put things in there to fit instead of thinking functional.  Ever since then, I've been coming up with ideas to increase storage, but never made it functional (adding workbenches and storage cabinets.

I've finally had enough of that.  Yesterday, I started taking everything out of the garage.  I'm going to start over from scratch.

    Here is my idea.

    1. remove everything including all benches and cabinets
    2. patch all of the holes and damaged plaster.
    3. paint entire garage
    4. install a new flooring.
    5. build new workbenches
    6. build new upper cabinets
    7. build an 8" by 8" storage closet
    8. install new lights

I'll share some pictures when I get them.

Awesome.  Let me know if you have any questions along the way.

  6. I've made quite a few x-carve projects over the last 3 years and about a year ago, I started adding colored epoxy to my projects.  I've really liked the results.

Eric is a huge Cubs fan, so I went ahead and made him a custom Chicago Cubs X-carve project.  He just received it yesterday and seems to be pretty stoked.

Since Epoxy can be a bit intimidating if you've never used it before, I went ahead and made a "How To" video to show how to use the x-carve and how to work with Epoxy.

  7. Hey guys.  Sorry I've been away for so long.  No good excuses, just got away from me.

As many of you know, I'm now writing and creating videos for TIA.  Sarah Listi (new writer) came up with an idea a little while back where between her and I, we are creating 5 simple projects for Mother's day.  They are meant to be simple projects that can be done in a weekend.  These are being rolled out one per week for 5 weeks.

This week, (week 2) I created a tutorial article and video on how to make a stripped cutting board.  I love making these items, and I can get them done in a weekend, so it made perfect sense to add this to the Mother's day list.

Here is a link to the write up and to the video.

Let me know what you think.

Holy shit Jet $1100 and $1400 for Router tables!

Kreg just came out with a router lift, I could buy it, one of their tables, and still have $300-$600 left compared to buying a Jet model. I also don’t see a list of compatible routers. The majority of router lifts don’t fit the Milwaukee routers, in fact the only one I know that does support it is the Kreg one.

It is a bit pricey.  I bought my Rockler unit for about $800, but I didn't some of the features the jet has.  I'm not sure of the price shown is for all of the options or just for the basic setup.  I am assuming its for everything.

  9. The new JET Router Table features a cast iron or MDF table top, precision router lift, fence system with feather board and flip top add-ons, easily transportable rolling stand, and multiple dust collection features.

Options include a cast iron or MDF table top, precision router lift, fence system with feather board and flip top add-ons, easily transportable rolling stand, and multiple dust collection features.  All components are also sold separately, so that users can mix and match them to assemble the router table solution that best fits their woodshops.

A choice of either cast iron or MDF table tops offer options for durability and affordability.  Both table tops have a footprint of 32” x 24” to support a wide range of work pieces. The precision machined, cast iron table weighs 88 lbs. and provides maximum durability and a solid surface for all routing applications.  The lighter-weight MDF table is melamine-topped for a smooth work surface.

The milled aluminum router lift has above-the-table height and lock controls for convenient tool adjustments and changes.  One turn of the dials raises or lowers the lift 2 mm at a time. The lift’s sturdy, four-post screw design with chain drive keeps tolerances tight and rigid.

A micro-adjust fence assembly includes easy-to-read guide rails that allow users to dial-in the exact size profile required.  A scale on top of the fence facilitates placement of stops at different points of operation.  The adjustable fence provides optimum support for work pieces of different sizes.  An integrated dust port is helps clear dust and chips at the source of the cut.

The heavy duty floor standhas an integrated mobile base and onboard accessory storage.   A power switch attaches to the stand, allowing the operator to control the router without reaching under the table.  A miter gauge also is included.

The dust collection system features an enclosed dust box that surrounds the router, as well as an integrated port in the fence at the source of the cut.  The dust box’s all-metal construction with air flow vents ensures maximum dust collection and containment, as well as durability.  The dust box has a standard 4” port.       737000WK.thumb.jpg.2097e0cc547cef405360c15bb155b133.jpg

  10. JET’s new 10 in. ProShop Table Saw is loaded with features usually reserved for higher-end saws. Woodworking shop owners and enthusiasts can choose from the standard 30 in. or upgrade to the 52 in. rip fence and select cast iron or stamped steel extension wings.

The saw’s interior has an improved blade shroud surround to improve dust collection capabilities. A convenient, oversized magnetic paddle “off” switch is employed for safe operation. The motor’s reset switch has been conveniently relocated to next to the saw’s power switch as well.  The JET ProShop saw is powered by a 1-3/4 hp, single-phase motor that’s prewired for 120V or 230V operation.

JET’s innovative single-lock ProShop fence design helps provide professional results as it glides easily along the saw’s rails.  The left-tilt saw supports sheet goods and other dimensional lumber with the optional 52 in. maximum rip capacity to the right of the blade and 13.5 in. to the left.

The ProShop saw also accommodates 8-in. dados with a 13/16 in. width. A dado insert is included with the saw. A miter gauge with adjustable positive stops helps set up cross-cutting operations and miter cuts.

The JET 10 in. ProShop Table Saw is covered by a 5-year warranty

I might take another look at Bessey clamps when these come out if I can lay my hands on some.  I really and truly dislike the existing Bessey K Body clamps.  The release mechanism in the lever on the ones that I had was always sticking and really difficult to engage and release without picking up and moving my entire work piece, which of course moved things enough that everything shifted out of alignment.  I ended up selling them and switching over to Jets.

I've had the same issues with the besseys.  I think it has a lot to do with the grooves they cut in the bar to help the jaws bite in.  I bought a couple Jorgensens right before they went out of business and I really like them.  I haven't tried the Jet clamps yet.

  12. Oh man, I just thought of another thing.  Parallel Clamps.  I use them all of the time.  I've got Bessey Revo clamps and some Jorgensens.  Unfortunately, Jorgensen went out of business recently.

As a matter of fact, I just noticed today that Bessey has come out with a new set of parallel clamps.  They improved on their K Body Revo clamps and they are calling them the K Body REVOlution.  I don't believe they are available yet, but when they are, I am getting some for sure.

  13. I saw those seats on either facebook or instagram a little while back.  I think they look great and I am surprised at how much I really want to have them.  The industrial storage racks are nothing new and look to be a rebranded item with DeWalt's colors.

It works a lot better for miters, maybe I need to get at least four of them and it would work better but the surface isn't grippy so the pieces can move on you.

I do have four of the corner clamps.  It allows me to keep all four corners aligned and if something is a little off in the middle, I either use a clamp or push it in by hand to line it up.  They seem to hold very well on the plywood I've been using.

I might have to get those. I'm not a huge fan of the Kreg corner clamp, sometimes it still comes out a little off and my OCD can't take it.

It's ok for some things but not great.

I'm going to be creating a video on some tricks for getting good pocket hole joints shortly.  I haven't used the Kreg corner jig shown above, but it looks like it has potential.

  16. I didn't buy this today, but I bought it very recently.

The Rockler Clamp it Corner Clamping jig.

I have to say I love these clamps.  I'm getting much better results when building things out of pocket holes than I did in the past.

These aren't my photos just so you know.

  17. Thanks a ton guys.  I am excited to be here.  I hope to add a lot of value to the page and the forum.  I've been really busy and haven't spent much time here in the last 6 months, but that is going to change.

On top of reviews, I plan on doing some build projects.

I spent two weeks during X-mas to build my wife a barn door storage unit for my wife.  I took a lot of video footage and plan on putting that together soon.  Hopefully it comes out okay.  I learned a lot from doing it and made a few mistakes along the way.  They weren't catastrophic, but something to think about if you try it yourself.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.  I was a little nervous on how I would be greeted.  This is Dan and Eric's channel.  I'm just glad that allowed me to be a part of it

Here are a couple pictures of it.

  18. Hey everyone,

Sorry I've been away so long.  Summer time I am up to my eyeballs in Girls Fastpitch softball.  My daughter plays on a travel team (Michigan Bolts) along with Little League.

Just last week, our little league softball girls team won the Michigan State Majors (12U) championship pretty convincingly.  We outscored our opponents 73 to 13 over the week and were only behind for one inning (1 to 0) the entire tourney.

The girls now get to play in Indianapolis IN. for the Central Region Championship along with 8 other state champs.  We will play Missouri on Monday and Iowa on Tuesday.  After that, we will go into bracket play to decide the champs on Friday.    I think we have a real good shot at winning this tournament.

If the girls do win, we will be off to Oregon for the World Championships.

We have started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for the teams expenses, so if you wouldn't mind sharing it on your social media sites, I would appreciate it.  Also, if anyone associated with this site contributes, please put a comment referencing TIA somehow.  It would be cool to see.

Also, if you have any interest in follow along with the tournament, there are two ways it can be done.  One is clicking on the link for the official site.  Two, I was told this should be available on the ESPN app.

  19. For the past 18 years, I've been a Lab Technician in a power plant.  I am responsible for making sure all of the water in the plant is in spec, handle waste, test fuels, perform environmental rounds, and just about anything else the company can pile on.  Prior to that, I was a lab tech at a waste water treatment plant, a lab tech in an environmental lab and a geoprobe operator/field tech that collected enviromental soil and water samples.
