  1. I started doing pens about a year ago when I had to relocate to the city and live in an apartment. They do pass the time, but you can get pretty creative. I really enjoy the wood pens and have recently started turning acrylic pens also.

Hello, I am a new member here and have a question.  I would like to purchase a portable air compressor.  It will mainly be for "home use".  I would prefer a "quiet" one on wheels or portable with wheels and not one to just lift from place to place.  I've been doing some research on line but I found this forum and thought I'd ask.  I do know that everyone may have a different opinion too.  I do understand about the SCFM and other criteria for a compressor for the intended use. I am just looking for what you have and likes and or dislikes.  Does anyone have the Lowes Quiet Tech compressor? Or maybe a Rolair or California Tools?

    Thanks for any input,

I have the Lowes quiet tech air compressor and love it. It runs about 10 or 12 decibels less than most air compressors it's size and has been trouble free since I bought it which was only a few months ago.  I mainly use it for small cfm air tools like drills, a small sander, and blowing off my work station when I'm doing small projects.  Comes in handy when I blow the junk out of range brass before cleaning in my ultra sonic cleaner.  I actually did a video showing the noise difference between the Quiet Tech and a pancake compressor the same size but was never able to upload to this group. A hair dryer is louder than the Quiet Tech.  Bought it mainly because of less noise, compact size and the fact that I currently reside in an apartment, so I have to keep the noise level down to an acceptable level. Fits perfect in my portable work bench I keep tucked away in my closet.

    Sorry just caught this

Yes, filtration system that I was using a centrifuge to remove the sediments but it all broke apart slowly and long story short, it hasn't ran for a year or so, it's kind of frustrating because of how difficult it is to work with it. There are different methods out there to filter the oil but the centrifuge was absolutely incredible.

So I've lost of a bit of enthusiasm for it but I'd like to get it running again sometime.....

Had a buddy years ago who did the same thing. He would collect the cooking oil from local restaurants and make his own diesel. I think he said he had to add some type of chemicals to it.   He drove for almost free while he had the truck.

  4. When I'm not working at my day job, You can find me either in the apartment reloading or making something cool with one of my lathes or at the range shooting up my reloads. Here's what I made today on my metal lathe using a piece of stainless steel I had laying around.

Yes that pipe froze mid flow smh.

Feeling your pain. Went home for Christmas and spent too much time troubleshooting my furnace problems.  Finally got it fixed by replacing the fan switch and blower motor.

Ok so first off, I finally finished up this plaque I have been working on. Made from cherry and joined together with biscuits. Just have to put a couple coats of poly on it and it'll be good to go. Second I made this miter/table saw station. I made it so that the height of the table saw table is level with the miter saw. I can also use the fence of the table saw as a stop block on the miter saw. If I have to rip something wide on the table saw, I can just life off the miter saw and be good to go. I like how the fence of the DeWalt table saw is removable so I can cut really long pieces on the miter. Just have to run to Harbor Freight to grab some casters and it'll be finished! Put my brand new DCD791 drill and Kreg pocket hole jig to some good use tonight!

I can only imagine what the neighbors think. You are rad. This goes to show that if there is a will there is a way. Keep it up and post some pictures of your projects. What kind of lath is that and where did you get it from?

What the neighbors don't know, won't hurt them.  I've been in this apartment for almost a year and have not received one complaint about noise or dust.  I do run a pretty tight ship when it comes to wood turning, always keeping the dust collection system on and taking extra pains when it comes to clean up.

  8. Welcome to the group Jaybird.  There are a great bunch of folks on this forum that can provide a lot of experience on everything from home repairs to turning wood and metal on lathes.  Let me be the first to offer some advice based on my experiences with teenagers.  There all antisocial and I was the same way.  Teach that young man the basic safety rules, provide the tools and materials  and he will most likely astound you with his creative mind.

Finally had some time to put this up today ? I gotta say I like it but the clamps we're kinda of a pain in the ass to get tightened other than that really cool for my tough boxes I'm also thinking about maybe selling one or two of my boxes to get the tough boxes with the drawers for easier access

Would love to have those in my garage.  Looks like a great space saver where you can actually find your tools when you need them.
