DeWalt DC730 Cordless Drill Battery Issue?

I bought this drill 12 or so years ago. The OEM batteries are DW9094 14.4vdc NiCads. I have struggled finding replacement batteries since both NiCads have pretty much given up the ghost. Recently, I purchased a non-OEM NiMH battery from Amazon that was advertised as a direct replacement. With the new battery installed, and I'm at max speed (regardless of setting 1 or 2), if I don't slowly wind down with the trigger, I get a snap noise and quick white flash coming out of back top of the drill. If I slowly back off the trigger, nothing, no noise, no flash. Any thoughts what might be causing this? Is it possible that the NiMH battery is kicking out higher amperage and all I'm seeing/hearing is contacts breaking from the drill drawing max, then nothing?

yes thats right, its missing a diode in the circuit to redirect that high v flow when shut off.

eventually the contacts will burn out from arcing.

Is it a missing diode or one that's blown? Looking for a guess. Then again, now that you probably have it, I'll just have to remember to slowly back off instead of abruptly stopping. I've got my use out of it.
