  1. late to the party (again). sad, another old USA name bites the dust, especially when driven by the greed of the (mis)management i have armstrong. i like the chrome finish on wrenches, in fact, the armstrongs live in drawers away from the worker wrenches. saltus, combos, ratcheting combos, dbe. ratchets live with their brethren, stored by size. i think theres about 10 or so rats. i have been buying menard's masterforce sockets as replacements/fill ins. they're made in the same USA plant as armstrong. the chrome finish is very good. workers on the left, museum pieces on the right.
  2. i;m sure you'll get'er done, rich
  3. you could open yourself to liability on servicing your unit, especially an oil burner
  4. this is a tool forum, so, an incomplete listing of tools used to perform the werk. harbor fright beam type 1.5 hp wet 7'' saw. #62757.bought last year to do 2nd floor bath, about $250. tool worked somewhat satisfactory, the legs are cheap shit, 1 got mangled. saw blade is (was) true to beam/fence. water pump was more than adequate, had to attach rubber flaps to minimize over spray. built a visqueen 'cocoon around the saw work place. placed 'strategic' rags on the table to minimize overspray. sump does drain from bottom, a big plus. miter gage was useless, as it is strictly right handed, and the motor (on the right side of the blade) has only about an inch of clearance over the deck. towards the end of the, didnt have time to check what's what, cuts weren't square. blade used was a bosch 7'' continuous rim, bought from cripe. one blade was used for the entire job. maybe thats why things werent square at the end. (i'll figger this out later) previous job, (2) hf 7'' continuous rim and a dep (home depot) blade was used, in a larger bath, with way less cuts. diamond grit hole saws were bought from mc master, no name, 1 1/8 & 4''. worked very well. pilot drills also from mc master. holes drilled in tile, used ryobi glass/tile bits. poor tool, or mis application by me. the no name bit given to me out lasted the mulitple ryobi's i trashed. electrical device square holes were cut with a 4'' continuous rim ridgid dry blade. worked very well, and did not kick up as much dust as i thought. my mud mixer drill was a single speed USA milwaukee right angle drill. other drills used, 3/8 and 1/2 USA milwaukee vsr. 1/2 18v ridgid. 3/8 12v milwaukee. saws, USA milwaukee sawzall, USA porter cable left handed circular and jigsaw, 18V milwaukee sawzall, 12v milwaukee circ and hacksall. 12'' dewalt sliding double bevel. 10'' crapsman table saw. 3x21 USA porter cable belt sander. 18 ga porter cable finish and brad nailers. metabo 4 1/2 and 6'' grinders. a whole ensemble of countless hand tools. i did find that a new dewalt 25' tape, with the huge end, was a royal pia. that one was retired, used mostly 25' fat max and a 3/4 wide 25' craftsman incomplete pics of tools. if more is desired, i might be able to accommodate.
  5. annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd done! caulked, wall hangers up. just need HER to get off her ass to clean the floor and i can chalk the commode. brats can bathe/shower tomorrow
  6. kicked the job hard in the arse. tiling and grout is done. only have to calk and hang the hangers on the wall. and SHE still has to take care of the tile haze.
  7. most of my power tools were bought way back when, when they came in steel cases. whomever the engineers are, who designed plastic cases, that the cord must be tucked in exactly 'so', so you can close said plastic box, should be lined up against a wall and shot. ive tried to hollow out plastic cases. usually wind up throwing them out. the tool bags kits come in, arte generally useless. i pick up steel cases wherever i can, and homak still makes steel boxes, made in USA.
  8. broke down and bought a m12 #2407-22 drill kit from the orange box. trying to minimize my various battery tools. a ridgid 18v battery died, out of warranty. checked ridgid website, none of my surviving batteries are warranty. my vsr drill's chuck is becoming questionable. only have 1 ridgid charger. 1/4 impact, snake lite. decided to be done with ridgid. i already have m12 bandsaw, circ saw, hack saw, various lites, multiple batteries and chargers. going to throw in the junk bucket 12v dewalts, joining my makita 9.6 and 12v junk. thinking about selling dewalt 18v impact with 2 batteries, charger. i may keep the m18 sawzall. and i am keeping my 18v bosch batteries for my bosch radio.
  9. a little background. i usually buy materials for a job, sometimes months before i start a project. except , of course, the vanity and top for this job. usually start the project when i get tired of tripping over stuff. started grouting the tub. seeing how much grout the accent tile and the gaps were eating, decided to check where the bags of grout were hidden. turns out i only bought 1 10# bag. very unusual for me, im the guy who needs 2 gallons of paint and i buy 4 (ya never know when ya might need it). no biggie. drive past tile store............... color was discontinued last month. they had 6 other shades of grey (not 50, heh heh). momma picked one. im going to NOT remove what ive already done. finish the 1st row of accent from the top in the shower stall, save a little grout, and then mix both together to finish.
  10. what kind of baseboard? wood? different tile for trim? thickness differences?
  11. a buddy gave me this. his uncle worked in a factory on the assembly line years ago. think it's kinda cool. wierd hex drive size, 7/16. and, no, i havent tested it. i aint getting zapped.
  12. i have used the chain saw attachment, i think it's called 'lancelot', or something like that. removes wood like a beaver. grinders............. 4 or 5 6'' metabos, 2 or 3 4.5'' bosch, 7'' milwaukee, 1 4 1/2 dewalt, 1 black and decker, 3 die grinders, and i guess dremels should count, i think there's 3.
  13. towel bar and coat hook will go somewhere in the tile course between the accents any input on a door stop? install a springy on the door, on the wall, on the floor, or those ones that install on the hinges?
  14. coupla pics. may forego tiling the rest, get to cleaning and then grout. my savages then could use the shower instead of mine
  15. looking good. i used 1/16 spacers on the glass tile. if you havent done it yet, it's going to be a bear to get the mortar out of the grout lines once it's set. im picking the stuff out now.
  16. sitting around, decompressing. long day, as most lately have been. dishwasher died, new is in. i wanted to replace the electric whip, didnt want to 'tim taylor' another project. snowblower died, 2 stroke single action toro lasted 17 years. replaced with a 4 stroke single. old door and jamb out. new jamb and 6 panel door in. room side oak trimmed. just got done tiling the back wall, where the towel bar will hang. cheated a bit with left over oak. seems the gap between the door molding and the tile would have been about 9/16. i think i 'hid' it pretty good. too pooped to snap pics, ill get some soon. ( door jambs were hung to the same plumb of the original. new door seemed to have an automatic closer. carpenter gave me a tip, slight bend to a hinge pin. it stays open now)
  17. one of the many things figgered out at 3 in the morning when i should be asleep. channel is installed, away from the water direction, except the top one, if that makes any sense. would have been way easier to take out the window, but, that would have opened another can of worms. looks nice, pia (to me) to layout.
  18. damn, have i been busy. anyways, got the ceiling finally done. laying out the window was a minor pia. a few imperfections, i'll live with them. pobably wold have been easier using bullnose trim tile, instead of schulter trim. looks good, she likes it, and the window will be covered with a shower curtain most of the time anyway. another thing i learned, was not to start at both ends. lines matched up pretty good, except one spot. oh well, i aint tearing it all apart tomorrow, pull the sticks. finish a bazillion other minor things that have been on hold. next, i HAVE to tackle the door.
  19. well, to prove im not a complete hack, broke down and bought a tub of spreadable membrane. the little window ledge has been bothering me, especially at 3 in the morning when im trying to sleep. painted the 3/4'' ledge around the window, and whatever i didnt tile on the wall around the window now, that i have the goo, i shoulda spread it all over the shower stall. probably will have a 7/8 full tub of hardeded crap next time i open it.
  20. we covered this topic at work. two carpenters, 1 painter, 1 plumber, 4 engineers. a couple of 'em own rentals. consensus was 'it 'll be fine'. durock is porous. mudding those seams wont add much, if anything. + both baths i demo'ed in this house, 1 was green board, the other plaster, with no barrier, the walls were not damaged. same with the 2 baths in a previous house. + i'm leaving this overtaxed state in 3 years. it'll be fine. + i aint a pro.
  21. any reason to as in why do it?
