  1. HA nice, i was just messing with you, i obviously didn't know what you were getting, but being a Bosch boy, would be funny to see that show up.
Honestly I'm not sure how much I'll use the DeWalt sander, I like my Makita and I'm sure i'll like the Festool, but a third sander.. hmm I'm not throwing it out with the bathwater, i have to give it a try first!
It says it's their "Perform and Protect" line of tools, which makes me wonder, do they have a better dust collection extraction system on this sander? It's a really nice dust bag and locks on real nice but what is so special about this that they have the "Perform and Protect" logo on it?

It's your backup backup sander, for when you inevitably have to send the Festool in for the vibration issue everyone is having.

  2. My RZ Industries mask came today...and by that I mean my replacement. I ordered their "Spitfire" design which came with one of the rivets on the nose clip broken and missing half of the Velcro needed to secure it on your face. Contacted RZ and they sent me a replacement. Unfortunately they're waiting for a new shipment of "Spitfire" and gave me the option of waiting or choosing a different design. Since I needed the mask ASAP I opted for the Limited Edition Gas Mask instead of waiting. They also were nice enough to send me a 3 pack of filters for the inconvenience.

  3. I've used SketchUp for the last 6 years (I think) and I really like it for my uses, shop projects and temporary projects.

It's gotten better over the years but something are probably a lot easier in more expensive programs like Autodesk. My biggest issue is when I am trying to round something over but I don't need to do that often.

I found it rather easy to use and I have no background with drafting programs. I had the basics down in about an hour. I tend to try to do things on my own before looking for tutorials or help with it. That being said there are a lot of good tutorials out there for it now. The ones from Jay Bates that rfwjr mentioned are good. Like most things there is always something you're not going to know that someone else does.

I use the free version, now called SketchUp Make, because I don't use it for commercial purposes. Any benefits from using the paid version are lost on me because of the $800 price tag (at least I think that's still the price).

It does not have keyboard shortcuts for every tool which can get really annoying. There is nothing worse than getting really into a project and flying through it only to suddenly need a tool that doesn't have a shortcut and having to find it in the tool bar.

  4. Alright milwaukee, it's early February, where do I get my 2860 impact wrench haha.

Does anyone know if they've been released anywhere?  I see on the HD site they have user reviews, I assume they're early release people because you still can't order them online.  Acme says you can pre order but estimates ship date isn't until the 22nd.  I'd be more than happy to pre order if it meant getting it sooner but I don't want to pre order at the wrong place and end up having to wait longer.

They're not out yet. Milwaukee is sending them out for people to review already. Mechanical Hub got two yesterday. Kinda hoping one shows up on my doorstep in the next few days.

Since they're not being sold at an "incredibly low price" you can probably pre-order and not end up waiting forever like those of us that ordered the Festool sanders from everywhere or anything Flexvolt from CPO.

I picked up a Jawhorse Sheetmaster which I stole (if you're in the market, Rockwell is selling them on ebay like $65 off, best price I've ever seen anywhere)

I have to say even though it folds compactly, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to secure it inside my trailer, it's quite heavy and oddly shaped...I'll figure out something.

I also bought some Toughbuilt tool bags from HD online, one of my electricians has some and I loved their system so I picked up 3 of different sizes to give them a spin. Bought a set of extra clips and mounted them to the wall in my trailer so I can just unclip them from my belt and right onto the wall which is nice.

While at HD I bought Klien's new heavy duty wire strippers which are nice, good addition to my bags since I'm sick of my cheapo pair twisting and bending when I'm trying to grab wires together. I also picked up a new Miluaukee impact bit set to give those a spin, DCF887 has been going through bits like crazy so I thought I'd see how these hold up, but right out of the gate I'm irritated in the set. It proves 3 nut drivers, which are neatly color coded and such...but they're smooth shank?! This is a impact bit set...and they don't have quick disconnect ends on them? WTF? I'll probably chuck those in the trash tomorrow and get some real ones in there but I couldn't believe that...

    48-32-4005_2.png

I actually used my nut drivers from this kit last night for the first time since I got it and was not happy to find I had to use one of the extensions to use it in my impact. I'm going to pickup some of their longer nut drivers that are actually usable to replace them.

I have this older Shockwave kit that comes with the longer nut drivers.

Also, getting the bits out of the newer kit is a huge pain.

  6. I plan on keeping the mag/demag in my service bag. I may not use it much either, but it was inexpensive enough, and there have been times when I could have used one!

The driver I'm actually thinking of keeping on my pants belt beside my phone for a week. I'm always looking for ways to lighten my tool bag.

That sounds scary about the tape! I have a larger kobalt reel tape also, and wanted to try out this compact one. It's small enough that I could fit it inside my back pocket, but I'll most likely keep it in my work pants cargo pocket. (In the event that I need to use it of course)

Nothing scary about the tape I am just an idiot. I bought the 300' tape, went home, started playing with it inside, pulled out over 100', and then when reeling it in it jammed up. After playing around trying to fix it for an hour I gave up. I literally broke it the first time I used it. After that it was decided I wasn't allowed to buy that kind of tape again.

  7. Well I got my deal of the day from earlier this week, plus a few extra goodies I added to accompany the driver on its journey . 28276558058604e7c66c30cfcaee9074.jpg

Also picked up a pocket magnetic Stabila on Amazon.
*KC tool sticker for scale. Sorry no banana on hand!

Had lunch with my Eaton Rep, and main electrical supply house manager last Thursday and had a great convo! And just got my ECCN anniversary t-shirt in as well!

And I picked up these bad boys at the Depot.

Every time I look on KC Tool I think about getting that magnetizer/demagnetizer and never order it because I don't think I would use it.

I really want that Wera driver but I don't "need" it and keep procrastinating on buying it.

The Milwaukee 100' tape looked nice in Home Depot yesterday but I can't use those kind after an incident with a 300' Kobalt tape a few years ago.

  8. I had a few items I won from Bessey during their 12 days of Christmas giveaway on Facebook finally show up this morning.

    BV-HW45 4.5" Bench Vise

    bench_vise.png

I think this will be rather useful for some projects. I have to do something about the jaws since I will be using wood. Maybe make some wooden replacement jaws.

    D15-SET Compact Aviation Snips

    compact_snip_set_closed.pngcompact_snip_set_closed_2.pngcompact_snip_set_open.pngcompact_snip_set.png

Comes with Straight, Left, and Right compact snips. I'm not liking the pouch because the snips being compact means that only about an inch of the snip is visible out of the pocket. It looked fine until I took the snips of the card backs. I think they use the same pouch for the compact and normal size snips. It also has an extra pocket that's rather small I guess it's for a marker.

    WMS-5 Welder's Magnetic Square (x2)

    WMS-5_welders_magnetic_square.png

I guess I need to invest in a welder now. They're really nicely made. The 112lbs of pull is rather nice. They're not strong enough to crush your fingers between them but are strong enough that you don't have to worry about them moving around on you. I need to pickup a metal service cart/tool storage cart and my original idea was to stick these to the side but now I'm thinking the better solution is to keep them in their boxes in a drawer.

I'm completely unfamiliar with lockback knives, never heard that term before.. I guess it's like an old school pocket knife? Something Grandpa would have in his pocket to cut twine off bales of hay.

I'm not familiar with it either. The was the first time I've heard it. I'm use to seeing linerlock for this style knife. This is basically what I think of when I hear it.

  10. Dude I thought waiting two months for the results from the PE exam was tough...this is worse!

Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk

It doesn't matter if it takes a week or multiple months the waiting never gets easier. I just waited 4 months for my Festool sander and am still waiting for something I won from Bessey before Christmas. In retrospect I ordered some pliers from Sears and waited 4-5 days and it still felt just as bad.

At first I made an adapter to hook up a pool hose to my sander and attach it to a Ridgid shop vac, but this kit is so worth it. http://www.rockler.com/dust-right-universal-small-port-hose-kit-with-auxiliary-hose  You can sand for hours and not even need a dust mask.

(when I bought it, it only came with one hose.)

At that price I will probably just get the dust bag since it's only $30.

I passed on this deal because I already have a Festool ETS 150/3 (which is a 6in orbital sander) But I'm so kicking myself now. The systainer, cord and coupon were worth it alone.

I wish I had the money for 3 or 4 of them when the pre-order opened. It would have been nice if the coupon was able to be used on accessories. I need to pickup the dust bag/box for it.

  13. So I finally started my Knipex collection. I ordered them from Sears since I had $20 in SYW points and a lot were going to expire soon. So I bought the 03 01 180 7-1/2" Combination Pliers & 20 01 140 5-1/2" Flat Nose Pliers. The combination pliers were free with my points.

  14. This showed up from Home Depot this morning. Unfortunately the UPS driver is inept and dropped it onto my steps instead of placing it on them and managed to break the case in two places and rearrange the entire contents of the case. I had just the 1/4" Dowel kit coming from Sears, I ordered the entire kit from Home Depot afterwards since it was so cheap, but somehow when it got to UPS in Maryland last night the contents of my package went "missing". They found the box empty and discarded in the facility. I chatted with Sears and they gave me a full refund, some coupons, and 10% off my next order (supposedly but I don't have a coupon code yet).

  15. Well, today I made a big glaring exception to my general policy of always buying pro tools from pro brands:

    Screenshot at 2017-01-24 20-14-31.png

All my life I've done trim the old school way, with a hammer, a box of finishing nails, and a nail setter.  I don't have a lot of occasion to do it, so I've gotten by with that.  But I just did that pocket door project and it would have been really nice to have a nailer, given how flexy a pocket door frame gets when you try to nail into it with a hammer.  And I have three more door-related projects in the pipe, so I decided to go shopping for a nailer, and found this.  Ordinarily I would never buy something at this level, but the reviews overwhelmingly say that it is much better than you'd think for $27.  So I decided to try it.  If it doesn't work well, I'll send it back and get something better.  It arrives tomorrow.

I've been looking into a few benchtop tools and the WEN items seem to have pretty decent reviews in line with brands like Ridgid, Ryobi, and Porter Cable. Unless you're using it all day every day it will probably do just fine. Will it last as long as one of the better brands? Probably not.
