  1. Just tried getting the bit out of the impact clutch to see how easy it is.

Erm NO its held in there like a woman in a shoe shop LOL you need grips to pull the bit out (may get easier over time) but that's gonna be a pain if you are up a ladder.

  2. You sound like you are doing the right thing Locky and thinking about it before you buy.

I would go the 18v way myself and for the building trade torque is king for drills and impact drivers and 2 batteries per tool 3ah lithium ion minimum per battery.

If you are in Australia then I would look at which manufacturer is best for spare parts and service also because down time while a tool gets fixed is a class one pain.

I've been told Hitachi are big down under, but if you like milwaukee then I would go for the new brushless fuel drill and impact driver with the new red lithium battery. Its going to cost you a few quid pal but I've looked at these and they are almost as powerful as my Metabo LTX tools.

One last bit of advice is Good quality Blades and drill bits because ANY tool is only as good as what you put in it bud and cheap crappy blades and bits are a danger to you and everyone round you on a site.

If you can find a supplier who lets you try before you buy then go for it remember you are going to have this stuff years.

If you need any advice at all just drop me an e-mail wayneburgess63@yahoo.co.uk its no bother and good luck in your career. :)

  3. Hi Locky,

Buy quality, and just a reminder that some of the new 18v stuff will probably out perform, and in terms of battery life last longer, than 28v stuff that's out there.

I will tell you the same as I have to my Son mate, buy a few top quality tools, Hand and Power tools, and build it up slowly .

And keep an eye on the oldies and what they use, they may know a thing or two. :)

  4. I must admit I scratch my head sometimes, at the random way Dewalt seem to put out new kit.

Do you think they get out a world map, and a set of British pub darts and throw them at the map to decide what gets released where? LOL :)

  5. Don't know about over in the U.S, but over here in the U.K they are selling off older type ni-cad versions of Dewalt, Makita and Bosch for peanuts. They are stacked high in many D.I.Y stores for £99 or even less.

Maybe theres a move to sell all these off before they put newer stuff on the shelves.

Dewalt have let folks down I feel with tricks like bringing out a new battery nailer, but using old battery technology so you can't put the slide battery out of your new tool in the new model.

But I hear they are following Metabo by bringing out a 4ah battery, and I don't think they would do that if they were on the way out. :)

  6. Drills without torque settings are a bit like teenagers without grown ups around.

Things might go great for a while but you just know sooner or later its all gonna end badly LOL :)

I had a big powerful drill with no Clutch/torque control at all, I was reaching through a gap high in a building to drill through some steel sheet for a pipe when the drill bit jammed the drill spun and broke my finger.

That day I learnt a lesson NEVER have a drill without a clutch/torque control.

And screwdrivers with no clutch. If you are putting in 2 screws, then you may not see the benefits, but if you are putting in 200 or 2000 screws you deffo will. :)

  7. I would take all these tool war video clips with a massive pinch of salt.

And the ones where a tool company has made them even more so.

And beware the guy who has everything made by ONE company the one colour wonder who is so deluded he thinks one company makes the best everything.

After 33 years in the building trade I know this is not true, one company may make a fantastic drill, but a saw that sucks, and another company may make a fantastic corded tool but have a less than impressive cordless line up.

A case in point is Panasonic, Fantastic cordless tool line, but find a panasonic corded tool?

In my experience for what its worth you get what you pay for, and my manufacturers of choice are Metabo, Panasonic, and Milwaukee.
