  1. weren't Makita mainly running Ni-Mh(?) when everyone else was running Ni-Cad?

With regard to Dewalts initial 20V / 18V XR line, I've never once seen a DCD990 in (aus) stores, and rarely seen the right-angled drill. Most stores had the large hammer drill, compact drill (or 2), impact driver, recip saw, circ saw, SDS and light. 5 or 6 real tools to choose from, and they came out slowly. Grinder should have been available at launch. But I'm proud to own them :)

  2. You choose the shipping company (knowing what the price of each is). Then you pay shipito the shipping plus their fees, which depend on how much work they do for you in consolidating etc.

This was my total price for 6 purchases all consolidated into one fairly big box (26"x13"x13" & 31 lbs) to Australia.

    Processing Fee $16 (6 packages)

    Repacking fee:$12.00

    Postage:$111.18 (Carrier $106.60 - Bank fee 4.3% $4.58)

    TOTAL:$139.18

  3. Nice. Did you get the dewalt jacket only or kit? I'm thinking about getting some of those for family members if the deals are still good.

That's how I do it buy and upgrade my stuff and sell the old

I got the kit (with the intention of selling off the battery and charger to make the jacket even cheaper). You need the USB power source to power the jacket.

Its REALLY nice quality! It looks and feels great (i got the hoodie) and will last years and years.

  4. As mentioned in Tool Talk 3, Dan and Eric were nice enough to try out an International give away, to me!

They sent me an awesome Milwaukee laser distance finder to my US 'virtual' address (provided by Shipito) and I had Shipito send it to me via TNT. Took about 10 days from when i clicked send to arrive at my door in Aus.

I let it sit in my mailbox for a week or two though, cause I got busy buying from the US ;) Got all this (plus TIA giveaway) in one big box:

    EBAY:

Dewalt heated jacket kit (CPO deal)

    Dewalt ratcheting wrenches

    AMAZON

    Dewalt DCF880M2

    MLCS Router Bit set

    Kreg Jig kit

    Some adapters and nutsetters

What a birthday haul. Now to offload some other stuff to pay for it all!

  5. Are you referring to the original m18 compact drill? I got a chance to check it out and it wasn't heavy.

i was in a tool shop the other day holding and twisting several drills, including the original M18 compact. it felt much more alike to the M18 FUEL than to the Dewalt or Bosch compacts.

Glad the newer version is short and lighter! I'd like to see a comparison of the Dewalt, Bosch and Milwaukee compact drills!

  6. Despite not owning any, I'm a big fan of the Milwaukee 18V line.

As ace as their line-up is (particularly FUEL), to me, the most important tool in the whole line-up is the compact drill. Most of the time many of us don't need the power/weight/size of the premium hammer drills. And unless the US has something Aus doesn't, the compact drill is a let down.

I'm sure its got plenty of power, and the metal chuck is nice, but its still heavy! And the FUEL hammer drill is shorter (to its credit)! Comparing the Dewalt and Bosch compact drills, the Milwaukee is just not compact.

Does anyone agree? Is there any whispers of an update?

  7. the Dewalt 12V Max stuff is good. I have the drill and screwdriver (love them), sold the impact due to owning an 18V and would love to try their 3/8 wrench. If you already have 20V Max then your charger can charge 12v max too which is a bonus.

These tools might cover your needs perfectly. BUT they only have batteries up to 1.5Ah (compared to 2.0 and 4.0 from Bosch and Milwaukee). They also have a tiny range.

But Milwaukee (then Bosch) have much better range and battery options.
