  1. When I work, I work hard.
When I am home, I relax. (I try to...)

    I don’t do side work.
    I couldn’t if I wanted to.

My other half sees me relaxing and takes it upon herself to find things for me to do.

    Isn’t that nice of her?

Pretty much sums it up I think. I'm not shocked by anything Milwaukee falling at the first hurdle any more.

    They set weird precedence.
They came out with so much so fast and rather then slow it down a little, they seem to want to introduce 100 new SKUs every 6 months.
Instead of Milwaukee base layer tee shirts, markers, levels, heated gloves and lunch boxes, how about you make really good quality tools with a 3-5 year refresh?

  3. 4-pole vs brushless will get more interesting as time goes on because brushless still has more ability for computer-controlled modulation. Drivers would probably continue going down the brushless path while larger, obligatory high-output tools like saws, sanders, and planars may be better kept as 4-pole.

One of the things I love about brushless is the precision that the electronics provide.
You just can’t beat the versatility of a brushless impact with tek mode and variable speed/torque.
As an electrician who does does controls and commercial, I am always using the various torque and speed settings.

I agree 100% about the utilitarian tools being brushed. More cost effective, easier to repair and better for harsh/wet/debris-laden environments.

I would imagine that someone will create a better brushless tool, with some way to better cool and seal the unit from dust/water.
The only issue there is that it would even more expensive. Given the rapid model changes and upgrades, it would be so hard to commit to any brand without fear of missing something better.

My worry is that's a problem attributed to Milwaukee and the lack of care they take rather than a problem with permanent magnet motors.

Heat kills electronics. Brushless is all electronic controls. In the race to jam more into a smaller housing, you’d best have adequate cooling!

I built a small deck with an M12 Fuel impact and I swore that thing was gonna catch fire!

If you want a tool that can survive the hardest punishment and the toughest conditions, brushed still has advantages. Especially with repair costs.

  5.  That's true. But for now those 4 pole brushed motor that have equal power to a top brushless are still quite alot bigger and heavier. Example the biggest Hilti drill.  It's the heaviest, bulkiest and biggest high end drill around.

People are already complaining about the heat generated by the new compact M18 Fuel Hammer Drill/Driver.
    Smaller isn’t always better either.
The Hilti is bigger, but not so much that it is unruly. I personally love the side handle and size for drilling big holes. It’s easier to control.
    It is designed to work.

It’s not designed to be marketed, that’s for sure!

  6. I am a DIYer and looking at Investing in 18v  power tools and ope. I have it narrowed to Makita and Milwaukee. Which is better?

The actual differences between brand performance is minimal. The marketing hype is easy to get confused by, but at the end of the day, buy what you can afford.
Unless one company has a specific tool the other doesn’t, chances are you will be perfectly happy.

Milwaukee has been increasing prices over the years and you should wait for the free tool/battery deals if you can. Makita also has promotions, but not nearly as often. The everyday Makita prices seem to be a lot more consistent.

Makita certainly has a larger selection of OPE, but how many battery trimmers can a guy own?

Milwaukee uses Dremel accessories too. I use the Dremel flex hose and blade guard all the time on mine.

I use Dremel accessories on my M12 as well. I was worried that the already insanely noisy Milwaukee would be even worse with the flex.
    How bad is it?

Thanks, you have answered my question. If DeWalt has a brushless die grinder then high speed brushless has arrived. I just had not seen one before and did not know.

    Google 200000 Rpm brushless motors.

I want my cut off wheel to kill me and everyone within a 50ft radius!

  9. On a lot of forums the short lasting properties of WD40 have been discussed. WD stands for water displacement and it was originally to dry out wet electrical equipment by displacing the water. It is non conductive. It is also mostly solvent so it leaves very little lube behind. For a sawdust collector like a miter saw, a dry lube is the best bet. However WD40 is fine for the cleanup process with some mild abrasive.

I am fully aware that WD stands for water displacement, that’s why I mentioned water displacement in my post!

Dry lube isn’t as effective while removing the corrosion. The purpose of using the wet is to make the rust removal and cleanup easier. I wasn’t implying anyone coat a wood cutting tool with a liquid water displacement as that would be silly.

  10. What do you care? Somebody commented on my post. I have seen many old threads start again. I have no idea what you are talking about. Threads live forever.

You replied to a 15 month old post in the first place. That’s all. It’s just weird that you have replied to so many old, dead posts.
