When there is no blade in the clamp the two flanges meet and you cannot see the teeth that engage the slots in a blade. With a blade in the clamp the two flanges do not come all the way together and you can actually see the teeth on one side (below) of the blade. The teeth don't slot fully into the blade, because they are tapered to prevent any play between the teeth and blade.Also, it does vary a bit from blade to blade how much of the teeth you will see.
