  1. Hey Folks - have a question about using the roof of my attached garage as a deck/patio. I did this a few years ago using a product from Sani-Tred, which is basically a liquid rubber that is supposed to be able to hold up to the weather and also made to be walked on. To say the least I have been highly disappointed. It has cracked, gotten moldy, and looks like crap. The stuff was expensive too. I think I spent over $3K using their products.

Does anyone have any ideas on what other products would be a good alternative, or best practices on using flat roofs as decks? Thanks in advance!

I've got two decks that were built over my garages flat roofs. I can summarize my advice on one word... don't. Well, not quite don't do it at all, but don't walk directly on a flat roof covering. It will sag, the covering will crack and then you're in a world of hurt. I ended up having to rebuild one entire deck/roof with a proper slope, cover it with a waterproof membrane (EPDM) and then lay tile over it. The other one will have to be rebuilt soon as well. You can also install raised decking to protect the membrane.

I learned the hard way that the so called tough membranes aren't.

  2. I'm not a fan of Nest products there a little over priced. I don't know what code is in your area but we need a smoke detector in each bedroom and hallways connected to the bedroom plus they must all be interconnected. So for a four bedroom house six smoke detectors are required, only a crazy person would buy that many nest detectors. I have never personally installed one so I can't hate them to much..lol

That's fine for new construction, but without using some sort of wireless tech, it's really difficult and expensive to retrofit this sort of thing into an old house.

  3. Anyone heard anything about the high torque impact wrenches coming out in a gen 2 anytime soon? I want to buy one but I can wait if it's coming out soon

I sort of doubt it. The high torque wrench already tests out with like 1100 ft lbs of torque and can easily shear off bolts. How much more would you want? I could maybe see a OneKey version coming out next year to let you dial in a specific set of parameters, but I'm not aware that they've announced anything yet.

  4. There's another device that is essentially a set of headphones that a pregnant woman sticks to her belly to play music to the fetus before birth. It's supposed to make the baby smarter by letting it listen to music. The problem is that there's more then anecdotal evidence that babies are being born with hearing loss caused by the damned thing. Tiger moms figure that if some music is good, then more must be better and louder will be best of all.

I'm all for giving your child every advantage, but thousands of years of history and countless studies have shown that the way you do that is to SPEND TIME with them! There are no shortcuts do you can fuck around, park your kid in front of the television and end up with a well adjusted, socially developed and intelligent child. How about talking to your baby instead of shoving a speaker up your hooha?

    *sigh*

  5. My Lowes is currently listing all Irwin/Marples router bits on clearance. They seem to be around 25% off, so around $25 per bit. These are made on Israel, not China, but I've never heard anything about them, one way or another.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Worth it?

  6. Agreed, I have four. Two fixed, two plunge. My Bosch 1617 has a fixed base but I use that in my little Bosch router table

    Love that machine. Great router.

How do you like the Bosch router table? It generally gets good reviews, but I've seen enough annoyed people to give me pause. Any suggested modifications you'd do our is it great just add is?

  7. The Irwin's have a compound joint for leverage.  The Knipex are straight, single hinged cutters. A better comparison would be to the Knipex Twinforce.  Now, all I've got to do is scare up $70 to do a head to head ... on second thought, the Irwin/NWS cutters work just fine for me.

  8. If you use the googles, you'll find a lot of discussion about home depot no longer taking Lowes coupons. The thing is that every single one of these posts are from two to ten years ago. While I have no specific info on this new policy right now, I'd say let things cool down a bit and try in a few months. I think people went a bit berserk with stacking the Lowes coupons on top of the holiday sales and ruined it for everyone.

  9. Just to be that douche I had to go and buy one of these today to see how it stacks up.

I like the Dewalt knife. It's a good cheap blade. My main complaint is that it's simultaneously too easy and too hard to open. When closed, the hinge opens very easily with the slightest pressure on the thumb stud. I've had it open a bit in my pocket and is now relegated to a small pocket in my tool bag. At the same time, you can't fully open it with the flipper. Instead, you have to use the thumb stud and open slowly and purposefully. Not a huge problem, but then again, it's not a knife that I'd carry around for quick deployment. The fact that a two year old can open it easily also means that this one stays in the garage, away from the kiddos.

  10. Whalers...figures there's a term for it. Of course the more ridged the material the better, was suggesting sheeting because you had enough clamps on one end to do both sides at once. Efficiency is money. =-) Throw up pics of the finished product!

Whalers? I thought that sort of clamping mechanism was called a caul. (Honestly asking here, not trying to be a smart ass)

  11. For the price of this I couldn't pass it up, 180 on eBay free shipping, new in box... Haven't seen either one that cheap.

    Jimbo

Very possibly a remnant of the HD $150 off deal. There's been a ton of CL sales from resellers trying to sell the combos.

  12. I spoke with them on the phone. Apparently Milwaukee is discontinuing the CT kit so CPO won't be getting any more beyond what they had in stock. I managed to get them to give me a bare tool RA impact for the 99, which isn't quite as good a deal, but it still is a bit of a discount. I'm just kicking myself for waiting when the deal first showed up.
