Jronman
I am looking at getting a decent #7 hand plane. Any suggestions? I ordered the DeWALT 20v brushless planner the other day for smoothing but I know it wont do justice when it comes to jointing edges.
JMG
Pricey, but one of the best available... https://www.lie-nielsen.com/product/no.-7-jointer-plane Never seem to find any of them on the used market. Slightly less, but still decent... http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/153104/WR-7-Bench-Plane.aspx?gclid=CKGtu4S_otECFQkMaQodXH0O1w A garage sale or a swap meet during the summer might be your best bet though. I have occasionally found old jointer planes at antique stores in the past, but most of them wanted too much money for the condition they were in. Or an estate sale, since they are actually for getting rid of things unlike a garage sale where someone may be attached to something and want higher price because they don't want to get rid of it or because it has sentimental value.

Or worse the people trying to make a living running a garage sale business.
ChrisK
Try Lee Valley too, they sell Veritas planes. I have several specialty planes from Veritas and Lie Nielsen and they both make wonderful tools based on the Stanley's as well as there own. I did purchase a couple of Stanley handplanes on eBay but people ask outrageous prices for planes now. I bought a couple of beater planes, a 4 and 5 to recondition. One of those will go up for a giveaway here maybe of the spring or summer depending on when I get to it.
regopit
Power planers are nice but nothing beats a nice hand plane. I'm with ChrisK take a look at Lee Valley for new but look anywhere for used they always pop up.
albert.amantea
The difference between a garage sale and an estate sale... A garage sale is where you sell the stuff you no longer want, need, or have room for... An estate sale is where your family sells the stuff you cared about so much, you kept it til you died...
