Starred digitape

Years ago I bought a 25’ Starrett Digitape. I pulled it out recently, put a new battery in it, and tried to use it. Instructions of course are long gone. I get perfect results when measuring the length of a board that had already been cut by hooking the tape on one end of the board and letting the front of the case catch on the other end. However I cannot figure out how to measure and mark a board in order to cut it to length. I tried to extend the tape to the desired length, lock the tape, and reach under the tape to use the front of the case to guide my pencil. The front of the case is not perfectly straight so my result depends on where I can reach the pencil. I can only get about 1/8” from the desired length. Is there a way to use the digital function to mark a cut line on a board or do I just have to use the physical marks on the tape?
