Thickness planer blade life

It has been years since the 734 and 735 have been out. I have been eyeballing it for many years. What stops me every time are the continuous complaints about how quickly the blades are done in from relatively small use. Recently I was reading that the predecessor, DW733, did not have such a problem.

By almost all other accounts, the DW benchtop planers are among the best, until the cost of ownership and $50 sets of blades. After so many years of losing reviews and negative user comments, why hasn't DW improved the design of the blades worthy of a $500-600 piece of equipment?
