Coppertone
Good Morning fellas, I'm looking to get a bench vise for my new shed and have found many conflicting reviews/recommendations. I think I'm set on a 5" standard bench vise from a brand like Bessey from Lowe's. I'm not looking to spend a whole lot. Any recommendations or reviews? Dan - TIA
Personally I like Yost but they are not cheap. Bessey is ok, middle of the road. This might be out of your price range http://www.homedepot.com/p/Yost-5-in-All-Steel-Utility-Workshop-Bench-Vise-905-AS/202786363?MERCH=REC-_-NavPLPHorizontal1-4-_-NA-_-202786363-_-N
Javier
In not sure what the Lowe's ones cost but maybe try harbor freight if on a tight budget
Coppertone
Thanks guys!, I'm not on a tight budget, I just don't have the need for a super high quality piece. Dan, that vice looks like it fits the bill nicely. I was considering the Bessey 5.5" from lowes because it has the feature where the whole head rotates around. I haven't used a vise with that feature but was thinking it would be nice to have. Your thoughts?
Dan - TIA
The vise I have now rotates and to be honest I have never used the rotation feature. My main concern is for it to keep whatever its holding tight and secure. Bottom line is most vises do the job :}
NicholasShetley
If you can find an old yost vise I would do that. We have an absolute monster of a yost vise in our shop and we picked it up for almost nothing. Hit up a few local yard sales if you can. TylerDama
old estate sales would be another good place to look.
rtutsky
I picked up a 4" Fuller vise that I found on ebay. I got it for $30 with free shipping if my memory serves me right. If you are not in a hurry, searching through ebay would be worth the effort.
Coppertone
Thanks for the input guys. Rather than looking into one of the lower quality vises that rotate, I'll pick up a higher quality (Yost), normal vise.
Mr. Yellow
I dunno if they sell Brockhaus Heuer in the US. Those are quality vices from Germany and they have some nice attachments as well.

Looking at building a work bench out in my little shop and I've been looking for a quality bench vise that isn't made in china. These are super nice, thanks for introducing them
Fazzman
Alot of Newer vises are not built like they used to be sadly. Keep your eyes out for older models people are selling too like a Wilton or something like that. They are made like tanks.

Verktools
There are many good vises, but two good ones i have experience with and can recommend is: Ridgid/peddinghaus Superior, outstanding german quality that will last for generations. Also comes in two cheaper and a little simpler versions:Matador and Junior. Also the Brockhaus Heuer as mentioned longer up in the thread here is a beautiful piece of tool. Machined vise and toughened jaws. Will last forever. I like an anvil on my vise, so therefore i like the Ridgid/Peddinghaus best for my use (and which i have in my shop ) Have also destroyed 2-3 cheap chinese vises over the years, stay away from thoose
StrippedScrew
If you can get your hands on an old Record vice before Irwin brought them out, In my opinion the best made bench vices around. I still have my fathers vice which he brought back in the early seventies and still rock solid today. Pick up something like this
