ChrisK
Nice job Comp! How's the Purple Heart for cutting?
comp56
cutting and sanding is a bitch, reason being is while cutting if you heat up the wood any amount a gumby like resin comes to the surface and is almost black.......once this is visible it is almost impossible to remove .as for sanding it is like sanding concrete.......you pretty much have to use a course grit and don't let it heat up as you will end up with same problem......another thing about purple heart is the fresher the piece is cut from the tree you can get the more purple it is ........UV rays turns the wood dark brown so even if you make something you must seal it with UV protected sealant or it will change color. the piece I made is more purple in person than the pictures show.... ChrisK
Thanks for the advice Comp, I saw a slab of it at Woodcraft. It was beautiful. Crazy dense though. The piece you made is quite beautiful. Good work dude!
NERemodeling
Really cool! How do you apply that pattern, I'm gonna call it zebra, do you lay a stencil over it and spray the dark stain or is it all hand done?

DR99
That is pretty cool looking. It sucks that the wood is difficult to work with though.
comp56
thanks for the comments, ya like anything a little practice with a test piece goes a long way.......I do many projects with many kinds of woods.I always buy more than I need, I always use a small piece and try stuff with it to see how it reacts....some times what works with some types of woods don't work with others.... madman_us
the zebra style is stain right. you prolly used a template to apply the stain to get the zebra pattern
comp56
the zebra style is stain right. you prolly used a template to apply the stain to get the zebra patternyes I did and yes it is stain, I have a vinyl cutting machine, so I just make a stencil, stain, remove ......sand with 000 steel wool and a few coats of polly 000 steel wool sanding between coats....I use oil modified so coats are about 10 minutes or less apart... chadlanthier
Up here it's so cold, the stain would freeze before it dries.
