I see your point. It also took a long time for anyone (it was Makita) to produce a rival for the FUEL angle grinder and circular saw. Makita produced two wonderful tools, and certainly in the same league, but neither are more powerful...

that's true, it's a nice wacker!

i remember a comparison where the previous model was level with some of the pro brands with a much smaller price tag. I assume the newer model is better again...
found it:

What do you mean Dwain .. Maybe?
It's going to spank the Fuel's ass
hahaha
Not sure your opinion's are particularly objective Dominic
Re: the side handles above, both can come off and round the metal edges, but I find the Makita side handle much more likely to come off. I also think that the other side handles are sufficient, and that the Makita is a little overboard
But as I said above, Makita is an excellent choice for a chippie, and I would personally hold out for a kit including batteries with charge indicators...

This is the exact reason I created a comparison spreadsheet, so you could pick what tools are most important to you and then let the maths do the rest.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/143rz-J-plq2kG9uCfXfkpTkd-zHgFpwc6KfcM1FbPwg/editTo me, all the hammer drills produced by the main brands are excellent and will do a carpenter fine. Impact drivers are probably Makita then Milwaukee then Dewalt, but again, all great.
The jigsaws are probably all decent, with my vote going to bosch and makita.
I think you should focus on circular saw performance, and if you might be going to buy cordless nailers.
I pick Makita or Milwaukee as equal best overall for your overall needs. The drill, impact, jigsaw, circular saw are all excellent. with their saws you can get the 7.25" AND/OR the 6.5". You also have the option of getting a planer with these brands too.
If you are OK with having two brands, I would then add Dewalt for their nailers.
If other skins will sway you:
Multi-tool - Makita
SDS - Milwaukee / Dewalt
Compact Drill - Milwaukee / Dewalt
Grinder - Makita / Milwaukee
Recip - Milwaukee (maybe Makita when BL arrives)
Stapler - Makita
Holehawg - Milwaukee

I've been impressed by all the FUEL and regular M18 tools mentioned in the OP. I'm wondering if this is an issue of expectations?
-
Have you tried tightening a nut to 200Nm with that torque wrench then seeing what torque it says is required to loosen the nut with the torque wrench?
that's a really good point jeff, i should have thought of that. I'll check it soon.
-
i also find their website clunky.
-
in the dewalt's defence, it is more powerful than anything bar the fuel, and the 4 way blade holder is good feature.

thanks all
Great video, do you think if given time it would reach listed torque on mode 3?
i don't think so. id like to test other drivers to figure out if they would have the same issue...

oztooltalk review of this little beast. we really like it.

the screws in the big Makita 3912 are M4's too.

I'm not so sure. A bit of metho on a rag and that might clean up reasonably well. I can't see any obvious signs of actual damage. WIth a 4.0Ah battery it could be a decent deal, especially if he could be haggled down a little.
-
Thanks guys, it's a pretty nice SDS.

The only problem is people are brand loyal only because of the cost of jumping into a new battery platform
But that's not 'brand loyalty', just a sensible economic decision. They loyalty comes when you feel the need to defend the brands honor because you spent money on it.

I've got Bosch and Milwaukee. Nothing wrong with two!
The Bosch multi-tool (in particular) and jigsaw will be a downgrade in going to Red. Most other tools would be an upgrade, though i still love the BL hybrid. What people don't realise on the bosch impacts is how quiet they are.
I think the main reasons to change / compliment with Red would be FUEL recip, hammer drill, grinder, circ saw, big SDS and HT Wrench (in roughly that order). I think the recip is the only rubbish tool in Bosch's line (though I haven't used it).

JerryNY - The GEN2 FUEL with a 2.0Ah battery is a pretty wicked bang for buck (power for weight).
But if you're doing small stuff, the lighter weight of the compact is still more comfortable overall.
-
Yep we weighed the difference at around 60g.I always say, compact drill with slim battery for 90% of tasks is sufficient, but it does depend on your trade.
The GEN1 was not heavy in comparison to its competitors, in the middle of the (premium BL) field.

That's stunning Comp56. Would you be able to describe how you did it?
-
They will sell a different tool (DCD771 for example) ...... in order to hit a lower price point. But you won't find a cheaper/more robust version of the same model number tool.
Exactly. Would it be a fair assumption that this (DCD771 kit) was at the request/pressure of one or more retailers?
-
Sometimes large retailers have the power to influence suppliers into making a lower-spec model to meet a certain price point. As long as you investigate the model before you buy it, this shouldn't present you a real problem.
It is annoying if you've bought a budget model believing that you've got the regular model at a hot price. I personally don't like seeing the brand's quality confused by such moves (that why we have DIY brands like Bosch Green, Ryobi, Porter Cable etc), but this is the business.
What circular saw do you suggest
in Power Tools

This statement is garbage. The cordless dewalt saw is the best brushed unit around and still a very capable unit. Same with the Bosch.
The Dewalt lightweight (high-power) 7-1/4" circular saw is all anyone recommended around here for a while.
