We went with a comp cams xe268 cam in my grandpas 350. It is the biggest you can go with a stock converter. I would recommend the complete kit with a new timing chain and gears, lifters, pushrods and valve springs. I think it is 450 for that kit from summit racing. Were you going to use factory heads?

I'm gunna use it for more of a grocery getter than anything. I need new push rods lifter valve springs and if the heads check out okay I will be using them. I wanna try to keep it somewhat stock cuz of all the matching numbers. Some one used rtv to hold all the valve keepers and what not in so it's been a pain to get all that out. I've got it all torn down and going to clean it up to measure it.

Those little 283's were good little motors. They don't get a lot of credit being under 300 C.I., but they were solid little mills.

Keep those pics coming!

If you are going to use it for a daily driver I wouldn't go with a cam that big. My grandpas truck will be more of a show truck more than anything. I would go with something in the 240 range on the intake side. It will be noticeable but shouldn't affect the drive ability much.

NICE MAN!! let me know what upgrades you do and how you like them I have a 64 Impala SS with the 283...it is all stock but I started working on it this year and decided to keep the original engine just dress it up and maybe give it a bit of pep in its step :)
