Now that we have the camshaft picked out the engine shows 480 ft lbs and 420 hp. We still need to mess with the exhaust size and port and polish the heads. We now have the valves ground and the seats as well. We are pretty much waiting on parts now so we can get the block sent off to get bored out then everything will get put back together.

Someone brought in a big chevy bow tie emblem that we are going to put on the back of a ford fanboys toolbox on Monday. We would do it tomorrow but we don't have classes Thursday or Friday.

Nowadays with most blades being carbide tipped is that a normal abrasive won't touch them. They are far too hard and therefore a daimond abrasive must be used.

We have had two days in the 40's and I am already sick of winter.

Here are a couple of pictures. I checked the casting numbers on the block and it showed that it was casted in flint michigan in either 1972 or 73 I believe. It came our of either a car, truck or corvette.

Congratulations Chris!

I have the factory jack that came with my truck along with the lug wrench. I also keep a set of 3/8 sockets along with a few pliers and screwdrivers and a couple of hammers. I also have a set of cheap wrenches. Now that I think of it, no wonder I don't have any room behind the seat of my truck. I do keep a spare fuel filter and a spare module for the distributor since one crapped out on me. Now that I drive 300 miles every weekend to college I try to be prepared for anything.

Since you guys compared cut off wheels, why not grinding wheels?

We ran all of the numbers on the schools computer engine analyzer and it showed that the engine should make 420 horsepower and 450 ft lbs of torque. The final power numbers will most likely change due to the fact that the engine will most likely be designed for more torque since it will be going into a plow truck. I will try to get pictures on Monday. So far it seems that it will be the most powerful engine that will get rebuilt this semester. I don't know if we will get to run the engine on the dyno or if the high performance class will. If we get to I will try and take a video for you guys.

You can still use the older liscense plates on a vehicle so long as the year of the plate match the year of the vehicle.

I made this post to let you guys let you know what we are doing in tech school. There are about 15-20 of us in the engines class. Two of us get assigned to a project wether it is an engine one if us brought in to rebuild or wether it is a vehicle needing work. The engine we are rebuilding isn't mine but it is my partners. The engine is just a regular 4 bolt main small block chevy. Once we took the pan off we realized that there was a problem with the bottom end, the crankshaft had 10 times the minimum reccomended end play. We took the crankshaft out and checked out the thrust bearing, which controls the foreward and backward movement of the crank, and it only had worn 0.020 of an inch and there was a total of 0.060 of an inch of end play. It turns out that the other 0.040 came from the crank being worn. My partner was going to get new pistons and rods anyway so we just decided on a new 383 rotating assembly kit with new bearings, rods, pistons, rings, and a new crankshaft. In order to make a 383 cubic inch engine from a 350 you put a crankshaft from a 400 cubic inch small block chevy in it. You can get the kits with a cast crankshaft for under $900 all day long so he had no reason to go with it. That is as far as we have came in this build so far. I will try to get pictures sometime this week and I will keep you updated on this build and hopefully we will get to put if on the dyno and run it.

You won't need to go to the gym today Chris. I think we went through one 300 gallon (possibly) tank of propane this winter. We were in 3% by the time we got filled back up in the spring. The thing is they are calling for this winter to be colder than last year.

Congrats Frankie!

Well, today I finally made it back out to my grandpas today. I live in a dorm in the campus of my tech school since I live 150 miles away. I do come back on weekends though. We went though the front end and tightened up everything and greased it as well. We also took it out on the road for a test run and it drove great for what it is. We did forget to hook up a vacuum line to the transmission so it didn't shift right. It definitely is not a slouch. All of the local car shows are starting next week and will go until about the end of October. We will try to take it to every show we can make it to.

The carlyle stuff is almost as cheap if not cheaper than the truck tools with a student discount. I haven't checked to see how much the discount is with carlyle yet. I have the 100 tooth ratchet and it is a nice ratchet. Their screwdrivers are also good. I bought all of my service tools at napa as well since they are all rebranded anyway.

You need to have the school name and teacher name.
-
Whatever you do just make sure you register for the student discount before you buy your tools.

What are your guys opinion on the Pittsburgh line of digital calipers. I bought model number 47257 for $20. I will check the accuracy as soon as possible with a feeler gauge to see how accurate it is. Do any of you guys have experience with them?

I took a trip to harbor freight today and the pro boxes look great and the drawers move smoothly.
-
It is plenty big. I managed to get all of my things in a 5 drawer craftsman box. A couple of kids have one and they are noticeably taller and wider. You shouldn't have an issue with space. I just showed you that since it was pretty cheap compared to a regular box.

Milwaukee had an updated m18 sawzall at the event this year. I haven't heard anything about it though.

A lot of the hand tools are 50% off or more with matco but I haven't checked with snap-on yet. A lot of the air tools and such aren't off that much but are still a good chunk off.
New Midsize Pickup Trucks

Nowadays midsize trucks are barely cheaper than a full size truck. They are also about the same size so what is the point anyways. As far as mileage goes, one of my college friends has a 5 speed Colorado and he only gets 25-26 mpg and I get 21-23 in my 82 1/2 chevy.
