  1. I did a super quick, by no means detailed or accurate test but the results are very clear.

My old Makita BGA452 vs my new XAG03

2 fresh off the charger batteries

    2 minutes on the clock

1 3/8 galvanized pipe about 3/32 wall thickness

the BGA452 made 5 cuts (I tried to push it as hard as I could without stalling, did stall once) 2/3 bars of battery remaining after the 2 minutes

the XAG03 made 8 cuts and never even came close to stalling 3/3 bars of battery remaining after the 2 minutes

    60% faster!!

Again this was a very crude test but I was stoked by the results and thought I'd share

  2. They are gonna be coming out with the big one but that does very little for you if you don't invest in that new 40v battery.. plus, makita had the bigger 18vX2 out when I bought mine but the only real advantage was runtime (2 batteries duhh) and I preferred how compact and light the 18v one was..

just used it today while roofing!! Love that thing

  3. Mostly I buy the cheap pairs at harbor freight for less than $2/pair in clear, tinted and yellow mostly for the guy who works for me.. they end up getting neglected and beat quickly so I don't bother spending good money on them if he's just gonna trash them..

they do scratch quite easily though

My pair are festool branded but I'm pretty sure they are UVEX. They are so much nicer than the HF ones... the lenses are very crisp and clear, they are comfortable and stay in place and they really seem to hold up well to scratches.. they also have a nice foam case to protect them and even came with one or two replacement lenses!

  4. Does anyone know what the 5" model number is here in the U.S.? (that is if it has been released here) I can only find the 4-1/2" version (XAG03) for sale.

No 5" in the US at this time. I have no clue if there is actually any differences in the motor between the European 5" model and the US 4.5" my guess is no.. both diameter wheels have the same size arbor, correct? Just throw a 5" on the XAG03. If your concerned with using the guards, I'll try to remember to measure them tomorrow and let you know if they will fit a 5" disc.

FYI I'm pretty sure the larger disc you use the less powerful the unit will appear (something like that) you may want to consider sticking with the 4.5" disc for the performance.

  5. So I opened it up and the loosen teeth on the pawl were sheared right off!
Then I made the mistake of disassembling it further, haha. There is a little ball bearing and spring that need to be fully depressed into the head before the pawl can be reinserted.. not proving to be an easy task without some sort of specific tool to hold the bearing and spring in place. I just reassembled it without the bearing in place, taped the bearing to the handle and am going to send it off to snap-on to deal with!

  6. is it just me, as I like buying tools either brand new or in mint condition........just don't like buying well used tools I want to be the guy that marks, scratches, wears it out.....regardless of the price

Im with you.    i typically wont buy used power tools unless i know the person its coming from and how they treated it.. I will buy reconditioned though, ive had good luck with several manufacturers reconditioned tools.. the majority of what i buy is new though.

Accessories are a different story, im more apt to buy used accessories because it is much easier to really inspect them.

two of my festool sanders were used, but in both cases i knew who they were coming from and that they werent used very hard.. also im a little more comfortable buying used festool (especially if its within the 3 year warranty)  as they tools are really built to last and take a serious beating..

  7. Conductor's Mom: What do you want for Christmas?

Me: I dunno, maybe some wrenches.

Conductor's Mom: Good Lord, you can't be serious! How many wrenches do you have?

Me: What if 30 people stop by on the same day and need to borrow a 9/16" wrench? I'd be 2 or 3 short.

Conductor's Mom: You need help. Serious, professional help.

Me: I'll send some links to the wrenches.

Conductor's Mom: (hangs up the phone)

Moms, wives, girlfriends, siblings.... they will just never get it, will they!?!

  8. I have the making 18v blower and it's great! Don't expect to clean a pile of leaves from your lawn with it but I use it for cleaning off sawdust and dirt from garages, driveways, subfloors of additions, roof plywood and shingles during roofing.

Tons of other uses also. It's amazing how handy and powerful it is.

  9. Bummer they were sold.. the one on the left was either the ets150/3 or ets150/5. Current retail is $345 but that one was fairly old.. one on the right is the dts400 retail is $245 ( this is an awesome sander) also looks pretty old and beat in the pic though.

    what was he asking?

  10. Ive dabbled with this a little bit but sometimes its so hard to part! haha    i just cleaned out my garage and have a huge pile of stuff all the way from junk to decent stuff, even some new things... I just have to find the time to list them...   i was thinking of having a tag sale but its getting a little late/cold up here..

do you guys (in the US) mostly use craigslist or ebay?
