  1. I have seen some mechanics post pictures with their Wera screwdrivers having what looked like dry, deteriorating rubber...not often at all. Haven't seen any specific posts talking about it, think it's just abuse and harsh chemical cleaning. I clean my tools if they every get chemicals on them and if they start to look dirty, I start with simple soap and water, if that doesn't work, I step it up slowly. If it's pliers or something else I have to worry about rust, I use WD40 as the light "cleaner" ...though WD40 isn't really a cleaner, it works very well as one on metal.

  2. Yea, besides Dan and Eric's giveaways TIA does pretty awful in other companies giveaways  for some reason. I think we have a black rain cloud over us :(

I won one of the WA giveaways, that's how I ended up with an Ego blower! I don't think it really counts against your comment as they're a forum rather similar to this one, bunch of very cool guys.

Thanks for posting this thread Mike :)

  3. the wera and whia are more expensive and I know they are better bits and in the UK there's a lot of German quality bits available on eBay .

At the moment I use the dewalt extreme ( flex torque ) ph2 bits as I love the fit and they are working very well for me and they only cost £5 for 5 of the 50mm ones ( 2 inch lol) and for pz2 I'm using bosch extra tough bits as I love the fit again but I'm fussy about the shape of the bit on pz2 bits as the more rounded head bit's fit a lot nicer then the sharper edged bits ! I know that's not making a lot of sense but I will upload two photos and you will get what I'm saying

Dude, have you read this thread? I'm the king of fussy and overly critical! haha. I totally get it. We don't get a ton of PZ but yeah, I agree with you on the fitment. I almost prefer some regular phillips to those sharp edged PZ bits. I'm actually working on a reel-to-reel right now that is almost completely PZ, German-made.

  4. That drill is actually pretty good for the price. One of my co-workers has the reconditioned version, he paid $50 for the recon, $30 more for a new tool is pretty darn good. The drill is very light and more powerful than you'd expect.

  5. You guys might hate me for this... Wera ratcheting bit screwdriver is the KCTool tool of the day today. Amazon price $47, today's price at KC $36. Need to get to $50 for free shipping. Use this code to knock 10% off: "thanks2GJ" ...that brings it to $32.40 for the driver. (If you do use their code, you probably should register for their forum, it's free. Garagejournal is the site where the forum is located).

  6. Do you have any pictures of the bits you have used so far so we can see how they have worn?

Not really, they aren't really wearing that much...other than the Bosch and the Milwaukees.

The Blue-Point is finally starting to show wear, it took at least twice as many screws as the Bosch...both are usable but you can noticeably feel slop in the fitment. I don't think either bit will show the wear very well in pictures, basically the ribs get wore down and some wear on the wings(?) and the bit gets sloppy. The Blue-Point bit I really like so I've used that a lot, it has a really thin profile. I'll try tomorrow.

  7. That bit reminds me of the icebits that came out 15 or so years ago. I havnt seen them in a long time though. Which they did break tips a lot too. So that maybe why. Any body else remember them? "Ice bits" was what the name was on the bits.

Those are the Vermont American bits right? They were super hardened which I think was the problem with those, they have a deckster bit which I just bought...they also moved production of a lot of their stuff to China and the quality went down. I'm expecting some Deckster bits that are USA made in a few days. I have a few "ribbed" bits, none seem to have any issue with the ribbed design. My first was the Bosch, which is a nice bit...but the metal is soft so it wears quickly.

Here's some of the anti-cam out bits(old pic):

  8. Here is the Toptul bit:

Very nice machining and the anti-cam ribs are angled and really bit into the screw head, very nice bit IMO.

Problem is that the bit is longer than any other bit at the base of the indent groove. I use the Bosch Clic-change quick change and it didn't fit. I had to use the grinder to grind down quite a bit off the back, was a little impatient so I potentially got too much heat into it.

  9. thanks but it's ok on eBay the postage is about $18 or something so a set will cost me about £35 delivered ! I seem to have loads of impact bits but always want more lol

How much would a set of Wiha, Wera, PB Swiss or Felo cost you? I know prices are higher in the UK but if it's anywhere close to the cost of the Dewalt set, I'd consider those. The big thing about that set that makes us like it so much is the value, it's cheap for a lot of quality bits...but it's not German/Swiss/Czech quality. I just don't want you paying high-end money for those bits.

...though the screw holder might be worth it anyway because I don't think you can't really get it anywhere else.

  10. I agree.  I want to go with Robertson drive screws but have a large stash of Phillips.  When looking to start my Roberson stash I found almost all Phillips stuff.  Had to search to find Robertson screws then when I did find them they where at least twice the cost.

For now I have given up my quest for Robertson stuff as being impractical and focused on finding quality Phillips bits and screwdrivers.

Same here, that's kind of the whole point of this thread haha. We're pretty much stuck with phillips, which sucks, so we need good bits to make up for phillips' shortcomings. I wish everything was Robertson or torx, but I deal with mostly phillips and JIS. At least we're getting close to eliminating the need for slotted.

  11. Sorry to hear that.  I hope everything finishes healing up soon.

I'm surprised to hear maxfit are impact rated.  Just recall flextorque being impact rated, and the maxfit felt more like non impact rated bits.

    Thanks Jeff :)

Yeah, I agree, they're more substantial feeling than most impact bits but the little collar on it is enough. The Flextorque is a pretty crappy bit, in my opinion...you can even see it through the packaging. My initial impression back before this thread started was that Dewalt bits were about as good as Milwaukee...then Jimbo and another member who's name slips my mind at the moment mentioned the Maxfit and they were right. The difference in QC between Flextorque and Maxfit looks like it's coming from two different companies.

  12. Wiha also has factories for other stuff in Switzerland and Poland and Vietnam.

I think that's only some of their electronics stuff, the have bags and pouches stuff made in China too....nothing really note worthy, outside of pliers, made outside of Germany, in my opinion :)
