Hi everyone!
I am an Industrial Design student with a background in the construction industry. For my final project I am considering the future of tools. My goal is to make high-quality tools more accessible to everyone; both professional and amateur. It would be a huge help for me if you could spare 5 minutes of your time and answer the following questions. Any participation is appreciated, feel free to skip questions, and thank you in advance!
Which trade do you specialize in? Rough furniture making and Finishing (starting out), Drywalling, demolition, general construction
Do you invest in higher quality tools that will last longer? I invest in tools that are on sale that will do the job and won't fall apart in a few years.
Which tool brand do you use most frequently? Milwaukee
Can you think of tools that you would like to own, but can’t justify spending the money on? I want a lathe, but I want someone to teach me how to use it correctly I like my digits.
If that tool(s) were available for rental, would you rent it? Only If I learned How to use it correctly.
Have you rented tools before? Often
If so, which tools do you rent most often? Scaffolding, drywall stands, Demo hammers, excavators
Would you rather rent from an organization, or an individual? Whichever is cheaper.
Of the tools you rent, which is the most difficult to transport / maneuver? Scaffolding
Do you ever rent your own tools for extra cash? If no, would you? Why or why not. No, i don't like people using my stuff
Can you think of any specific tool that is in need of an upgrade? not at the moment
Can you think of any obvious change that could be made to a tool to make it more suitable for renting? Self cleaning Demo hammer.
Would you rather have 1 tool that does 3 jobs ‘okay’, or 3 tools that do each job very well. It depends, If I'm breaking up a small square of concrete, a heavy breaker sledge will do, but obviously if I need to do a 20x20 back yard then yeah, I want a tool that does it very well.
Is space-saving an issue when storing your equipment or working on a jobsite? Depends on if I'm in a small house in the city or not, space saving can be very, very attractive for someone that works in a big city like new york or sydney.

It's a DE9180.
It doesn't mention XRP (might be older, goes on a Type 10 DCD925) but NANO technology.
I'm not sure what that is then I've seen pictures on google about that battery but I only count 10 batteries 2 on each side 6 in the middle I'm not exactly sure where you're getting the extra 2 from because 12 batteries would be 24V full charge and 21.6v nominal
-
yeah that might be the xrp extended run time pack

In many cases, it's 5 in series (or ten total: two parallel banks of 5).
But in my battery, I can count 12 cells in total. Linked two by two in parallel, that means there are six in series!
can you post the internal of the battery?
-
the flexvolt has 3 rows of 5
18v nominal usually is 2 rows of 5
dewalt use 10 18650 series to get 18v

tbh if they wanted to make illuminate the whole thing they'd just make the chuck clear plastic and put the leds at the base of the chuck, but they'd run into people whining about a plastic chuck lol

Do I really need a 60V volt drill when a decade old budget level XRP drill can run a 4" spiral mixer in concrete on speed 2 or 6" spiral mixer on speed 1?
Same could be said about a car, computer, tv or 90% of any consumer product really.

I think I can see exactly why this happened, it's clear from the video...the vibrations on the Dewalt is so great the battery was flopping around like cowboy in a rodeo, probably interfered with the connection long enough to stall the motor.
Either way that was painful to watch.
yeah but i think dewalt could have done more with flexvolt, to me its just a recip saw, tbh most recip saws vibrate like hell, if it was losing connection due to to flopping around thats a very very big miss for dewalt. It might just be a faulty tool but im a but yeah im at a loss for words.

I heard a bunch commotion the other day from a few friends that have the new flexvolt recip saw that it stalls during wierd shit like cutting through wood with large nails or straight sheet metal then I saw this.

With my tools I know their limitations but I dont mother them the only time I clean my tools is if something oily or very dusty then I clean them. What I hate is getting my chainsaw covered in sitka spruce resin all over it is a real pain to clean it is so sticky the same with Monkey trees.
But when it comes to my old Stanley bench planes I keep them clean and oiled mostly to prevent rust etc.
WHen i lived in oklahoma I took real good care of my axes and my chainsaw, dusted the air filters cleaned out the compartment and took it apart, good ole stihl chainsaw's dont need much care but mines been around for a good long time.

I've heard of people going completely blind because fumes from solvents fused their contacts. It's incredible how hazardous they can be.
yeah i dont wear my contacts when working with any sort of chemical esp acetone, thinner or epoxy removers.

Haha yeah looks pretty good. but on the same note, you are probably way more organized and careful with things, and do what you think you should. I don't think it's necessary to wear safety glasses when cooking in the kitchen, but who am I to stop someone from doing so
I wear safety glasses in the kitchen when im frying and wearing contacts, a drop of super hot oil on your cornea and you're on your way to the ER because you wont be able to see out of that eye.

I'm pretty careful with my tools, though i have older ones that i still use that still work very well, they're beat to shit i keep buying new tools to make sure i have working stuff when those die but they just wont die. But when im at work and I use company tools i beat the hell out of those. But tools are meant to be used and abused not babied. A good tool is one thats beat to hell and still works 100% regardless of condition
-
It isnt like they abandoned 20v altogether, they release new tools dedicated to the XR line IE brushless planer the new drill and driver. They're not going to make an flexvolt multi tool or a flexvoltl um, hell im not sure what else you can make really that you could use on the jobsite that doesnt need a cord. 120v breaker maybe? Rotary hammer? Concrete saw, I mean what else really could they make that wont die in a few minutes and will equal the power of a corded/gas powered tool.

Not a tool, but I got this guy in today and another one with charger and battery coming tomorrow. I never thought I would say this, but I'm now in the Milwaukee 12v line...prices were too good to pass up though. I'm giving this one to my old man and keeping the other one for myself.

be real careful not to jumble the pads and the wires, they're not like the jackets they can come loose

so, today comes my metabo brushless drill from rebate! I should have picked the band saw (no use for one really), but i wanted the lighter more compact drill :< i love me drills, i dunno why.
Good luck finding the 2 listed drills though, it was a bitch trying to find a seller myself. Hopefully they'll show up somewhere sometime soon!

Lol to me its more of a "I treat work tools like shit, so I don't lend mine out because they will treat mine like shit."
