I think he was given powdered dried pig bladder to apply to the wound. It was supposed to trick the cells into thinking the finger hasn't devoloped yet and will regrow the finger. Seen a show that talked about it years back. I haven't heard anything about it since. I bet the fda refuses to approve it. I wonder if it would work with a foot.
