DamianD Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 So, Im replacing the floor in my kitchen, hallway, powder room, closet and laundry room with a nice slate looking porcelain tile. It goes really well with the stainless appliances we just had put in (not shown in pictures). My next days off Im going to start ripping out the old stuff and so on. What I can not decide on is whether to go straight and staggered, or diagonal. The fiance wants diagonal, im kinda liking the staggered. On the fence so Id like to know what you guys think. Ill be using a darker grout also.
ChrisK Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 Well 90 always looks good but... I think the 45 looks awesome WT. It brings a new architectural element o your kitchen and hallway and the slate is really nice. Looks great with the lighter colored walls and cabinets. 1
NERemodeling Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 I'm gonna have to vote staggered.. regular old straight 90* always looks good too but that's not an option Diagonal tends to be a bit harder to layout and install so be mindful of thatOne last bit of advice... happy wife, happy life! Gotta pick your battles!
madman_us Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 first 2 pictures looks awesome to me.
Scoszko Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 I'm a fan of the 45 degree (diagonal). I think it makes a space look larger. Although since they aren't staggered, you will have to be more careful making the grout lines straight, as any mistakes will be more noticeable. Staggering the tiles makes it more difficult to see since there are fewer continuous lines. I went through the same thing when I tiled my bathroom (45 degrees)
madman_us Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 my bathroom needs a remodel too. gonna do diagonal in there.we had our tile professionally clean on Monday and my mother-in-law just asked that guy how much he want to tile our bathroom.so the floor is just 5'x4' and the shower/tub needs some new tile too. so he said for 2800 he would do the job (just labor) we have to buy the tile.Inside I was just laughing haha
comp56 Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 you laugh and others pay......laying tile is right up there with brain surgery I think?......wife got a quote for our bathroom the way she wants it done......and I honestly think they look around the rest of the house and decide how much you will pay.....you livin in a high end crib versus a double wide ..........price is different......
madman_us Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 ya lots of people pay that kinda money but I don't count to those ones ok maybe they will get it quicker done but idc, im a DIY'er and save that money to go on a vacation or something
NERemodeling Posted December 4, 2014 Report Posted December 4, 2014 I think the dog says it all!Haha. That pooch looks really unsure of the diagional!!
Bigmikez Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 eitherway u go its gonna look nice man those r some nice lookin tiles
comp56 Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 looks like it will match counter top nicely as well....
DamianD Posted December 5, 2014 Author Report Posted December 5, 2014 Thanks for the input guys. I think im leaning more towards the diagonal. Like some of you mentioned, happy wife happy life. Plus I agree it seems to make a room seem larger that way. I saw these tiles at HD on clearance, around 75 cents a sq ft. Couldnt pass that up! Ill have to remember to take some pictures as I do the project and post them. Im usually terrible at remembering to take pictures as I go.
DamianD Posted December 5, 2014 Author Report Posted December 5, 2014 and the slate is really nice. Looks great with the lighter colored walls and cabinets. Thanks, i agree. Its funny because I absolutely hated the color of the cabinets until I layed the dark tiles next to them.
chadlanthier Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 Yep I would definitely vote the first 2 pictures.
regopit Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 Ok here is my 2 cents I would go with staggered but to keep the other half happy you could pick a spot in the kitchen, hallway or both mark out a spot in the center run a diagonal pattern then a border then your staggered. that way everyone's happy and you will have a lot lets cuts to make. Something like this
BK13 Posted December 5, 2014 Report Posted December 5, 2014 I'm going to dissent. Have to show her who wears the pants in the family. LOLGood looking' pooch!
Mikevango Posted December 6, 2014 Report Posted December 6, 2014 Your house looks pretty nice. I think you should hire a pro.
Daclark76904 Posted December 6, 2014 Report Posted December 6, 2014 Can you get any 6" tile to match. If so go with a pinwheel pattern
DamianD Posted December 6, 2014 Author Report Posted December 6, 2014 Your house looks pretty nice. I think you should hire a pro. Cant learn anything if you hire out everything.
Mikevango Posted December 6, 2014 Report Posted December 6, 2014 Ok. Just do your home work. I have seen a lot of failed "I can do it myself" tile jobs.
comp56 Posted December 6, 2014 Report Posted December 6, 2014 Your house looks pretty nice. I think you should hire a pro.some times even the pros don't have a clue how to do things the proper way.......anyone can slap a magnetic sign on the side of a truck
Mikevango Posted December 6, 2014 Report Posted December 6, 2014 But maybe they do know laying the tile at 45 will use 15% more tile, maybe they will have a jamb saw, maybe they know how to install the cement board and they may even know how to finish off the existing carpet to the new tile.
