Carl_Lucas
Hey guys I'm in the market for a cordless impact gun and I really like dewalt. My question is I see they have one with a detent pin and one with a hog ring. Which is better and why? Bremon
The purpose of the detent pin is to make sure the socket stays on. If you line it up with the indent in the socket it will lock on so it's safe for overhead use on linework, commercial and industrial sites etc., especially when the socket size isn't changing all day. Properly used you're basically guaranteed to need a driver to push the pin in for socket removal.Hog ring is for decent socket retention with ease of swapping. I vote hog ring.
Conductor562
I've got both and I will never have a detent model again. I'm actually looking at replacing the plug in the detent gun. If you're using the same size socket all day it's one thing, but if you're doing mechanic type work it's a pain in the ass.Definitely another vote for Hog Ring

Bigmikez
Hog Ring all the way!
NicholasShetley
I also vote hog ring. The detent pin on the dewalt is a pain in the ass if you have to change the socket. You definately need a small punch or screwdriver to remove it.
DR99
I don't think I would want a pin detent model. All the impacts I have are hog ring.

Charles Harris
Another vote for hog ring. I like the ease of swapping sockets. If I was using the impact regularly on a platform or scaffolding and didn't swap sockets much I'd probably get the detent pin.
