  1. http://www.woodscienceconsulting.com/wood-science-consulting-blog-/2015/7/30/checks-and-splits I am being lazy. Instead of attempting to write out a short paragraph or give a simple answer, I will just post the above link. It should answer many of your questions about checks (cracks) in lumber. It is a good primer on the subject. Instead of epoxy, and depending on the size of the split, many wood turners use cyanoacrylate gel (super glue gel) and inject it into the crack in question. Also, if using epoxy, you can make some sawdust from the board itself and mix it into the epoxy before filling the check to add some natural coloration. It won't be a match in color, but may be better than nothing.
  2. Blargh, I need to avoid the tool deals threads... Couldn't pass up any of those test sets myself either.

    Handfools

Had a friend gift me a pair of Harbor Freight grinders one Christmas. The first one fell apart when I pulled the trigger switch the first time, and the second started up but then fried on the first use under load (less than five minutes or so). As it was a gift, all I could ever say to him was, yeah, they're great buddy, usin the hell outa them... They weren't even worth the time it would have taken to return them to the store and went straight into the trash.
  4. I have one left over from my fathers tool kit. I don't think I ever looked at what brand it was... Still working after light duty 25 years on...
  5. I have an old Dalek style turbo II that is that is still going strong and also still has consumables available for it. It was one of the better tool purchases made, and is around fifteen or so years old now. Unfortunately, I have not looked at any of the new models in person, so am unable to give a specific recommendation, but from the experience of the existing unit, I would definitely consider another from the same brand if another vac was needed.
  6. I found one of the previous EGO 20" models on sale at HD about the time they released the latest version. I was a bit skeptical of the engineering when I first looked at them, but after using this one for a season, I no longer doubt the design. Works like a champ and is easy to store in the corner when not in use. The full retail price does put one off though. There is a Harbor Freight coupon for 25% off one item for Jan 1st and 2nd. You could attempt to get a price match...
  7. Posted a comment this morning and it seems to have worked correctly...
  8. Post office must be making up for lost time this morning... Don't normally see them until late afternoon around here.

    Panel Lift

Spent some time pulling out the rest of the sheet rock on the ceiling and cleaning up any nails and other debris left over from past adjustments to the basement. I then moved several of the storage shelf units for the third or fourth time... I have six of these shelf units, all purchased from Costco over a period of a few years. Price on them has always been around $150 each. They have been invaluable as temporary/permanent storage. I prefer the original units powder coat finish over the current matte black flavor they sell. Easier to clean off. Moving this time was to clear space to knock a hole in the floor to install a backwater valve closest to the outside wall... At least the drain line was easy to locate. Eventually I will have to empty this area too. Still have some minor water intrusion to fix on the window wall and need to sand down the old finish on the floors before applying the epoxy coat. Structural issues and mechanical first though. This room is slated to be my general workshop space, specifically this area pictured. The first picture will be the general storage area once the mechanical issues are all fixed, so those shelf units are close to their final home.
  10. Yes, I go by JMG where ever possible on tool forums. On instagram it is j_._m_._g because there are evidently a lot of users with the same initials, and that was as close as I could get without adding a bunch of numbers. As I stated, my comment did not show up and was made several days ago.
  11. Several days ago I posted a comment in the Makita sub compact thread and instead of getting a message stating that it was awaiting moderation, the screen flashed like it normally does when it shifts to the moderation note, but the comment vanished. Wasn't too sure if it had glitched or not so waited to see if it showed up with any other comments others might have made. It did not. Today I posted a comment in the Milwaukee speaker thread and the comment vanished again without leaving the awaiting moderation confirmation note. Any ideas?
  12. One of the better jobs I ever locked down was making replacement sash windows for a railroad headquarters. I wanted to use double pane glass, but the specifications were held to hysterical society rules and single pane glass. I think I got a case of carpal tunnel from all of that glazing putty. I applaud you for your efforts in the school of old...
  13. CPO must have an arse load of these kits. They have dropped the one time $20 coupon and just set the price at $129.99. Unfortunately, they have reset the free shipping minimum back to $199.
  14. My nephews bought me a six pack of micro-brew beer and some whiskey... They gave up trying to guess what tools I don't already have years ago.
  15. Thar be light at the end of that tunnel... Looking sharp.
  16. Last weeks additions to the tool kit...

    Wish list tool

Found another one for my list... Holtzapffel ornamental lathe.
  18. I think the balance improvement for the saw is more the location of the rear handle. I have the current x2 flavor and the front side handle and the rear one are just too close together. I will definitely be looking at the new model when it shows up here in the states.
  19. I've always equated that level with local traffic engineers, in any city I have ever lived in.
  20. I haven't purchased sandpaper in a local store for years... I generally make sure that there is enough around for any project that I may have in the works. Lately I have been using 2sand for my source. http://www.2sand.com/
  21. One of my customers gave me one similar to this several years back. Haven't used it recently...
  22. I think the man is upset... I do like the mans attitude in general.
  23. Most expensive tool kit EVAR... Shipping on that puppy must have cost more than I have earned in my entire life. I also noticed what looks like an Ideal wire stripper in that mix.
