Mac Died

Good Day Crew!

Well, my iMac just died! It couldn't have come at worst time, has we just had to buy a new lawn mower $350, and pay $475 to get our refrigerator repaired. So, I might not be around much till I can get it repaired, or buy a new one. I have $800 saved up, has I was planning on replacing it at the end of summer. But a new one will cost 1,800. I just gave my iPad to the Grandson for his birthday, so all I have left is my tiny iPhone lol. Has the old saying goes, when it rains it pours.

I've never tried a Mac, always tempted but for my use I just drop $400 on a new HP and let it ride! I'm a big fan of the all in one's just because they take up so little real estate on my desk.

If you're near Southern California I can fix it for you. No charge but you buy parts.

I'm not a fan of Mac, I consider myself to be an authority on computers. Afterall my field is advanced computers and electronics. ?

I have heard all the 'reasons' people buy a Mac but in the end it's really just clever marketing.

Bit for bit a PC is a better value with more capabilities. As far as build quality, you can find a PC that is built better then a Mac for 1/2 the price. The thing that frustrates people; there are 40 different PC vendors who each make 20 different models.

with Mac there is one vendor who makes three models. Comparing Mac to PC is hardly ever an apples to apples comparison.

for $800 you can get a PC that has 16gb ram, 1tb hdd, i7 quad processer, 4gb GPU. The same configuration in Mac is going to be $2k.

Sorry, I don't mean to be a hater, I really dislike how Apple runs 'marketing'

You're giving us good honest info based on your real work and actual interaction with them, I can appreciate that even if my opinion differs. That being said, I will agree with you about the cost/capabilities between the two. I doubt I'll ever get apple products for those reasons, but for those that have them and are happy, that's great, im definitely more value oriented.... although I won't entirely dismiss getting an iPhone, I need a new phone pretty badly. Among other issues, my phone recently while on WiFi was interfering with my internet, so I had to make my phone "forget" my WiFi then everything worked great! Thanks to@kato and the chat yesterday, I was able to get it fixed!

Sucks about your tech troubles@wigWagworkshop .... first world problems ya know lol

I might be ok, for now. I was able to get the base image on it, now I will see if I can do a restore from my time machine backup.  I just know they are going to announce new hardware at WWDC in June, so if I can get to work till than I will be ok, even if I just have to use the base image.  I won't be able to edit videos, but at least I can get online.  Good thing I have good backups of everything.

for those that suggested a Windows machine, thanks but No lol. I spent 15 years supporting Windows, I don't need the headaches.  This Mac has been good to me, this is the first issue I have had in 6 years, and it's a hardware issue with HDD.

Will keep you posted, fingers crossed...

Spinning HD? That's about the lifespan of a traditional hard drive regardless of OS.

im a fan of m.2 sata SSD. Plugs directly into the PCI-e slot and is significantly faster then SATA SSD. I ran two in RAID-0 on my MSI laptop. When working with large CAD files or video, the improvement is dramatic. Fast file transfer.

had a workstation GPU in the laptop also, video editing and modeling in realistic mode was not a problem.

MAC can do all this, but you have to buy it that way, often can't upgrade, and $pend 3x as much.

Im not hating on you WigWag, just Apple ?

I cant recall having any headaches since prior to windohs xp. but prior to XP they all sucked donkey balls. Currently im running Windows 7 PRO 64 bit, never have had an issue for years now.

Most PC issues are because people still after all these years are scared of computers and do something dumb like delete system files or some other sillyness. also because alot of people dont use antivirus and such and go to shady sites and wonder how that happens.

You and me both. I'll take a PC any day of the week. It's one thing to have a Apple phone but pay that premium for a MAC? No way.

Yeppers, I have my baby back lol... One thing I can say I love, Apple, and OS X.  Command + R on start up, select my Time Machine backup, a few hours later BAM, back to exactly where I was before the crash.  It ended up being $128USD out-the-door, plus they gave me 1/2 off memory to max it out, so I went from 4gig to 16gig for $48, (4 x 4gig sticks). It's like a new machine, should get me through until I order my new one, once Intel gets their act together and ship their new processors.

I know a lot of folks, have a negative on Apple, but you pay a premium for quality and support, plus has a photo and video editor, that tried just about every piece of software, none compared to the ease of use, and speed has Final Cut Pro X.

I kind of look at it like tools, sure you can get a drill from Harbor Freight, but does it compare to a Milwaukee or DeWalt? For the Festool users here, is a Festool worth the price you paid for it, compared to other tools in the same category?

Any who, just happy to have my 6 year old iMac back up and running

Except with apple your paying Festool prices for the same guts found inside a ridgid. Thats why I get upset, because they brainwashed millions of users into thinking Mac is something special in order to justify the cost.

The only nice thing about the macs is the build materials. The use of metals give a nice premium feel. Not worth the huge increase, but they are sexy. I would get a Mac if the price was right or if they let you install OSX on a build yourself.

Part of the reason why a Mach is "reliable" also translates to its price. It's very much a socialist approach to computers. With a Mac, everything must be validated. That means a team of overpaid engineers must approve every app, software, driver, or hardware. If it doesn't get validated, it doesn't make it to the Mac while the expense is passed on to the customer. This approach does two things. It decreases the possibility of user error, however, by requiring a special validation Apple locks down the system so a power user can't take advantage of the computers full potential. Another "trick" apple used to boost its public image was to over build their computers. The average user doesn't need a Mac Book Pro but because Apple only builds about 3 models, theres not much choice. Whats worse, the hardware inside the Mac Book Pro is often the same bits and pieces found in similarly equipped, & cheaper, PC's.

Mac isn't innovative, in fact they haven't really created anything scene the days of the OG Apple desktop. There operating system isn't bad as far as usability but it doesn't come close to the power of Windows or Linux. There is a reason why professional equipment runs on PC or linux. For a lot of the older generation though, Mac is familiar and Windows has a bad wrap.

The thing Mac did right was marketing. Everyone wants to be cool and a Mac is cool. They dumped a lot of resources into designing 'hip' technology. The play the image game better then any company I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong. The world needs Mac. Competition benefits everyone. Like many others, I learned computers on a Mac. They hold a special place in my heart. It's really a fruitless debate though. A majority of Mac/PC users already have their minds made-up.
