  1. around here permits are based on the cost of the job and typically run about $13/$1000 of job cost so they arent a big cost. check with your town building department.. you also may want to check with the town zoning department to make sure you can actually build where you want to. any decent contractor shouldn't mind getting a permit for the job. most likly the town will want to inspect the foundation before its backfilled, rough framing, electrical/plumbing rough, Insulation if necessary, possibly the roofing and then a finish inspection once its all wrapped up.. the framing, electrical/plumbing and roofing can usually be wrapped into one trip John
  2. here is a cool idea for recycling the exterior wall on the side you want to expand http://www.finehomebuilding.com/how-to/tips/recycled-garage-wall.aspx Its very hard to price something like that without seeing or knowing anything about where you live.. If you wanted some off the hip numbers i would expect around 5-7500 just for the excavation and foundation work a guestimate for the labor and material to hire out the framing, roofing, siding, windows/doors, electrical and some bare bones finishing of the interior might be in the 20,000 range.. again dont hold me to any of these numbers, this is just a 30 second guess based on no facts about what your trying to accomplish also assuming there is no floor above the new proposed garage space. your best bet is to get a few local contractors out there, be honest with them and tell them your just in the planning stages now and you dont want them to sink a ton of time into a full blown quote but you are just looking for quick ballpark numbers to determine feasibility. good luck
  3. Im fairly fresh here but have to say i really enjoy checking in throughout the day.. its a great place with so much diversity you can really learn a lot. Thanks to Dan and Eric, all the moderators and also every member/contributor on this site for making it a great place to hang!! John
  4. guys, keep updating the list periodically throughout the day if you are really wanting something.. every day they seem to add stuff but it does go quick! this years reconditioned got me pretty bad! I ended up with a Midi dust extractor (my second midi and third festool vac ) , LS130 linear action/profile sander, EHL65 Planer and the Planex drywall sander!!!! the last two were at the 40% off Im gonna need a bigger trailer next!
  5. It was a good 5 minutes before i even noticed there was a saw in that picture! haha Back on the topic at hand.. ill offer my words of wisom stay away from the Makita LS1016L I used to own that saw and had nothing but problems, granted i bought it the day it was released so maybe they worked some of the kinks out but it was a nightmare.. the bevel detent at 0 degree was like rubber, it would constantly come out of square.. the 5 piece fence was junk and needed constant tweaking, the casting on the fence was so bad out of the box that in order to square the fence to the blade i had to enlarge the bolt holes in the fence. on top of all that there was noticable blade wobble.. I moved from this to the Kapex and have never looked back, before i bought it i really questioned the money also but it really is a dream to use, granted i use my tools to make a living so possibly its easier for me to justify the price when its helping me make money. keep an eye on the reconditioned sale, since it went to 40% i have seen Kapexes twice going for $840!! If you do go with the Kapex, I really think that you wont regret it, the included miter finder is a great tool, the hold down clamp is the only one i have ever used, it is light, the accuracy is dead on and stays that way, the bevel control is soo nice to use and the dust collection (while not 100%) is better than any other saw on the market. I have also heard great things about the bosch and dewalt saws.. I imagine they will serve you just fine. Good luck! buy the kapex buy the kapex buy the kapex buy the kapex buy the kapex buy the kapex buy the kapex buy the kapex
  6. http://youtu.be/DWc8dUl7Xfo http://youtu.be/K3sdMEgor7E a few more pretty cool videos.. I agree, unloading that bobcat has to be a little sketchy!!
  7. Very exciting tech! I was just talking to the guy that works for me this morning about the new wave of cordless tools and how they are really becoming a viable alternative to corded tools.. I threw out how cool it would be if every tool in the trailer was cordless (he didn't buy it) a few months ago I believe there was also an article in popular mechanics about an advancement in lithium ion battery cell structure which dramatically increased its capatity.. not sure of the specific off the top of my head. cool cool stuff!
  8. Great review guys, I'm really happy to see this tool available, I was never happy with my old makita cordless grinder.. this looks like a real winnner. any chance you guys have used the Milwaukee fuel grinder? If yes, how do they compare
  9. I've got the 10oz wood handle finish hammer and the 15oz tibone full titanium framing hammer along with two prybars.. got both hammers at trade shows with slight discounts but still a serious investment.. no they aren't totally necessary but they do have real benefits such as transferring less recoil into your arm and are very light which is noticeable in your hand and hanging off your belt all day. They are a joy to use and just sweet!!
  10. I use Wera and am very happy with them, the tips fit well in the fasteners and hold up great. I don't have very long term use with them but so far so good
  11. Cleaning is a must and will actually help the blade or bit stay sharper longer since it will cut cooler (heat is no good for carbide) Sharpening is also something that everyone should look into. A little searching will probably reveal that you have a sharpening service somewhere nearby and there is also plenty of places you can mail your blades to. I used to use a local shop but recently switched to mailing them out to Burns tools. Burnstools.com. super simple and fast and so far the results have been great!
  12. I'm pretty sure the LXDT06 has been around for over 1.5 years now, still a very top notch offering from makita.. the new one we're waiting for here in the US is the Japanese/European model TD148D
  13. Excellent new tool from Makita!! I've owned the old model for years and never really used it much because it lacked power and would stall so easy.. it looks like they really addressed those problems in the new model. Great review! Anyone have the ability to put it head to head with the Milwaukee fuel??
  14. NICE!! It's strange how excited I am about this thanks for the heads up!
  15. Welcome back.. what a move! That's gonna take some getting used to I bet. I've never been to Arizona but have been to Bangor many many times, I've got family that lives in down east. I love it up there John
  16. Hey All, Up for sale is a brand new, unused, Milwaukee M12 Fuel Drill driver.. I ended up buying the new makita 18v brushless drill so im gonna sell this one. just a few weeks ago, before the new makita, i bought it as a kit but it never came out of its case (except for some pictures).. It has never had a bit in the chuck, in fact the chuck is still in the closed position it was in when i got it... I decided i wanted to keep the batteries for some of my other tools so im deciding to sell whats left as a "bare tool plus" kit! Included is; 1- brand new drill driver 2403-20 1- brand new 12v charger 48-59-2401 1- mint condition case 42-55-2100 and even cardboard sleeve if you want it owners manuals Price for everything, including standard shipping to the CONUS $139.00 $105.00 payment via paypal Thanks for looking and please let me know if you are interested..
  17. I was there also, as it gets closer, we should make a plan to meet up this year.. connect is really a blast but going out that night and even the jlc show the next day is super fun also. John
  18. I have several 18v impacts and that was what I used 99% of the time before I got into m12. The screwdriver is why I wanted any of it in the first place. A finish carpenter friend of mine was on a job with me a and he was so confused by me using a full size impact for everything... he uses a festool csx for most of his work and was all about the light weight, low noise (especially in an occupied customers house) and the increased control (you can feel what the screw is doing). That's what got me intrigued... I just couldn't justify the csx especially with their unique "centrotec" bits... now, I pick up the screwdriver first.. I love that thing. It really has great power and speed I don't think it would be what I reached for to build a deck but for it drives 3-1/8" grk r4 screws no problem so I definitely use it for quick, light, blocking and framing applications and it obviously excels at light duty stuff like cabinet hardware etc.. If you buy it I really doubt you will regret it.. it takes some getting good used to after coming from impacts but give it a few days and you won't want to put it down
  19. This is a sweet looking saw, hope it makes its way to the states soon.. definitely on my to buy list
