  1. Wow so maybe I'm not just a craptastic woodworker. I was thinking that I was just an idiot because my Pro5 sander would regularly just start vibrating horribly and hop around. I figured it had something to do with the fact that I'm using a shop vac instead of a proper DC unit. I guess I should read FOG. What would I need to do to get it serviced and how long does it take?
  2. What I wouldn't give to live in either of those places...
  3. Born elsewhere, lived everywhere, currently reside in Apex, NC.
  4. This seems to be the way of everything nowadays. There are fewer and fewer gigantic companies owning everything we touch than there ever have been in the past. If you really want an eye opener, take a look at how many food brands are owned by 2-3 gigantic mega corporations and you'll seriously think about only ever shopping at the farmers market and growing your own.
  5. I bought the Bora Miter X a couple of weeks ago and I can say that it works nicely. So far I've only used it to save myself having to do some math, but I imagine that you could use it for mitering odd angles as well.
  6. Nothing is ever free. You pay for everything one way or another. Wait, we're talking about tools here, right?
  7. That kit looks amazing packing so many tools into such a small package. I have no idea what I'd do with it, but I want it.

Actually this tab. It used to show a blue bar if there were new and unread posts in forum groups and in specific forums as you drilled down. The unread and new posts tabs show all new posts in every forum, so there's a lot of noise. I really liked being able to look to see if there were new unread posts in specific forums without having to wade through everything. The web interface does this by having the forum name bolded. Tapatalk does not.

    New Clamps

I've actually had really bad luck with Dewalt quick clamps. I've had three bad ones that started slipping so much that I had to throw them away. Irwin is my go to brand for quick clamps. Irwin also has a bunch of new accessories for their clamps that can make them into pretty serviceable corner and edge clamps. I spotted there at Lowes but you can probably find them online as well. I can also tell you from personal experience NOT to buy Tekton quick clamps. They are really poorly made and while they don't slip, they are flimsy, full of sharp edges and generally very poor quality, which is quite surprising given the usual quality of their other tools. For parallel clamps, I really love Jet. I've tried the Bessey Revo's but I just didn't care for the release lever. The Jets are expensive but definitely worth the $$$. For F clamps, you probably missed the best deals off the year a few weeks ago. HD usually has 8 clamp packages as part of the BF extravaganza but your local store might still have some left. I've been meaning to check out HF, but I need to build a clamp rack before I buy any more.
  10. I was going too say, I've got a very similar tool for sanding drywall patches. I can't imagine drywalling an entire room with it, but for small repair jobs, it actually does a pretty good job.
  11. I have the same wrench. It's great and probably the best adjustable wrench I've used, not like that's saying all that much mind you, but it is a very nice tool.
  12. Did it. Got the XL mask. It fits even worse than the large I don't know if my face is just oddly shaped, but the RZ mask doesn't work at all for me. It's either so loose that it's worthless to filter anything or snug against my face but squishing my nose so that I can't breathe. There is literally no way that I can put on the mask where it isn't compressing the tip and bridge of my nose. I think the problem is that the straps go behind the neck and so there's no way to keep them from sliding down the back of my neck short of making them super tight. I can tighten it up to make it airtight against my face, but then we're back to the whole can't breathe deal again. Pulling down on the nose isn't a good design imo. I think the ideal mask would somehow need to attach behind my head up by my ears. This would keep it tight across my face without putting pressure on my nose. This one doesn't do that so I'm afraid I'm just going to put both the XL and the L masks and all of the filters back into the envelope and send them back. Oh well, failed experiment but I'm only out $35, so it wasn't a super expensive lesson at least. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Tapatalk

I used to love using tapatalk. The forum update last year killed it for me though. Now, the fact that it doesn't show unread threads from the headers makes it really unfriendly to use. Who really wants to click on 13 different forums to see if there might have been new posts that I'm interested in reading? That plus it seems like it takes endless clicks just to get into the message boards. No thanks. Nowadays the only time I ever go into tapatalk is to post a picture since the mobile web interface doesn't play nicely with uploading pictures and crashes when I try.
  14. Thanks for the detail. I'm ok with the finishing taking a while as long as long as it looks good and lasts. The shelves are going to be in a kids room, so hard wearing is definitely a plus. Is there any specific sort of clear coat that you would recommend? Plain polyurethane?
  15. I'm building some shelves for the house that are going to be painted. The shelves themselves are built from pine with poplar edging, so nothing terribly fancy. I decided to paint them to hide a multitude of sins and mistakes building them as this is my first really large scale project and I'm still figuring out what works and what doesn't work. So, on to the question. I'm currently sanding in preparation for the primer coat. I was wondering what grit sand paper is sufficient for a spray painted finish? I know that you don't want to too fine grit for stain, but is spray paint the same? I've currently got them pretty smooth to the touch, but that really only required 120. How fine a grit is sufficient - 120? 240? 500? I'd love input so that I don't end up sanding endlessly for no good reason but I also want it to look as nice as is reasonably possible even given the fact that I'm a nub. thanks
  16. So what you're saying is that you passed up the perfect excuse to expand your red tool stable. Wow, and here I thought you were dedicated to the "collect em' all" approach to tool buying.
  17. What we have to do is buy this one and then send the receipt around to everyone in the crew so that we can each "return" the 7-8 that we've all got sitting in a box/bucket and then everyone can go on a tool buying spree! if only...
  18. I got out the M18 planer last night to even out the trim on my shelf project and ended up making great piles of freaky looking sawdust. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I'd love the M12/M18 bluetooth speaker, though I'm not really expecting to win of course.
  20. This, though I suspect that a full sheet of plywood wouldn't quite hold everything. Perhaps I should wait for the next give away to see if I can score some big red swag.
  21. Picked up a Stihl BR700 recently. It's a beast that will spin you around when you open up the throttle.
  22. Same here. I bought the medium one and I can't breathe through my nose wearing it. I'm not sure I want to give them another $30 to test out the large to see if it works any better. The medium one is unusable for me.
  23. I was poking around the CPO end of year sale items when I came across this interesting tidbit. The Fein Turbo II dust extractor is in the 20% off category. Combine that with the already discounted price (real price, who knows) and you get a Fein DC for $279 shipped. Anyone have experience with this DC? Worth it / not worth the trouble? There may be other good deals to be found among all of the clearance bits and doodads too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Before the holidays these were selling in the US for $249. I'm it sure if that deal is still available, but there were a number of sites that had it with free shipping as well. Either way, it's a heck of a deal.
