  1. by the time your done you'll have a new house
  2. I have built around 10 projects and I used oak on all except one in which I used popular as the wood. I found popular easy to work with and better than framing wood. I don't remember pricing but I think it was less expensive than oak. If you aren't into the green tinge it provides you may want to go with a different wood or use a dark stain on it. I made the mistake of using fruitwood stain on popular and it didn't match my oak stuff cause it was a bit green. I'm not as experienced as others but I would recommend starting with a cheap hardwood then upgrading to oak. Oak is a nice wood to work with. It is not terribly expensive like exotics yet not as cheap as say framing lumber. It also has a fairly neutral color that is either tanish or reddish. It also takes stain very well. The lighter colors even show up well. I would say sanding is harder than popular and the sanded surface is a bit less smooth because of the grain. Finishing can be tricky because of the wavy texture you can get. I think it's called grain raising? I still have yet to figure out how to resolve the wavy feel I get after I stain and finish. Eventually if you feel up to it you can dive into exotics.
  3. nice to hear more 20v coming other than the compact recip and nailers/staplers. brushless circ saw or jig saw? The diablo recip blades look nice. How do they compare to the recently announced milwaukee recip blades?
  4. they must be using carbon nano tube cells. cause that thing would be huge if it were li-ion cells.
  5. Every tool company has had some good announcements/releases. Makita with their sub compact line, Milwaukee with the one key reciprocating saw and 6.0 m12 battery, metabo with a new grinder and many others I haven't listed. I thought Milwaukee was the winner of 2015. Anyone think Dewalt killed it in 2016 with releases/announcements, maybe even a step above the rest? They introduced flexvolt with a cordless table saw and 12 inch miter saw, many 20v nailers, new 40v and flexvolt ope, and water resistant 6 bay fast charger just to name a few. I wonder who will "come out ahead" in 2017?
  6. never used one. They just fasten hangers to joists?
  7. In June at the Dewalt event the 20v 6.0 was announced but a release date was not confirmed. The 9.0 however was confirmed for a 2017 release but not a specific 2017 date. I think Dewalt made the 20v 6.0 as a compact alternative to flexvolt 6.0
  8. The first wave of 2017 tools are coming in spring I'm guessing. The 9.0 does look big but I would rather have a big battery with good cells than a more compact battery with not so great cells.
  9. @The.Handyman have you seen the 60 lumen light on the newest drill/hammerdrill? Think it should be included in the nailer? Same spot as the new nailer?
  10. The best base mounted dewalt light in my opinion is the 60 lumen light on the newest drill and hammer drill. Even when the switch is in the middle brightness it is fairly bright. It's enough to light up my room to some extent. Would be handy to replace their older base mounted light with the 60 lumen version. Looks like a nice tool.
  11. The issue I have with jointers is say you got a 6' x 10" x 1-1/2" piece of oak, the last few and could even say the first few inches are EXTREMELY difficult to get a decent cut on a powered jointer. It's just hard to get enough pressure to keep the bottom edge on the table because of the weight of the piece. Also @ChrisK how does a manual plane create a square cut? I'd be interested in finding a way to accurately joint large lumber. I've never used one so I'm not sure. If I remember them correctly they are similar to the 20v planer in that they don't have a fence?
  12. There new grinders looked really cool. A guy was doing an anti-kick test and he was supposed to cut a piece of metal. The catch was another guy was gonna pull up on the piece to stop the grinder to demonstrate a safety feature. It was very impressive how the grinder reacted. The wheel instantly stopped and the grinder didn't even kick out of the work piece. Once pressure was released from the grinder it automatically started back up. They also tested a competitors grinder and when the guy pulled up on the metal the grinder basically catches and flies out of the piece.
  13. could the 20v brushless planner serve the same function as a jointer? Might be a more cost effective option?
  14. if milwaukee has a precision drive mode it would only be available on their one key model. Their latest impact without one key has a sheet metal mode instead of a precision drive mode. Precision drive mode is a feature that slows down rpm and lowers the ipm to make for more precise fastening to help reduce over fastening, striping of fasteners, and breakage of fasteners. Supposedly it makes flushing a screw to the wood easier.
  15. surprised to see makita in the dewalt section. I would say the makita has compact going for it. The quick shift and assist features seem nice. You get customizability but without the need of a phone like one key. Dont know if milwaukee has a precision fastening mode like makita or dewalt. I like how the speeds are separate from the specialty modes. Not sure if this helped but I tried.
  16. The time after fall back and before spring forward time changes or standard time is +/- 0 hours. The time after spring forward and before fall back or daylight savings time is +1 hour. Removing daylight savings time would make it dark early all year round. Maybe it would be better to have daylight saving all year round?

    cpo dewalt

I've been happy with factory authorized. They haven't shipped my flexvolt or free tools yet but they haven't charged me for the free tools either.
  18. Might as well get the Powermatic PM2415B-3, 24" BANDSAW, 5HP 3PH 230/460V. A bit cumbersome to take to the jobsite but will cut through almost anything. A little expensive though.
  19. why not buy a few then sell what you don't want for full price? or to TIA members for sale price? could make some profit.
  20. that's a great deal. On factory authorized the 12 in non sliding with 2 batteries and the power supply go for $649. 2 extra flexvolt 2.0 for only $40 extra is a great deal.
  21. I heard that ridgid is very accurate. Not sure what model but could be an option to look into. The flexvolt 12 in sliding has gotten good reviews. Not sure if you want a 12 in but it might be an option.

    Shop help.

Yeah a compressor is handy to blow dust off stuff. Would a vac work just as well? It would sure keep the dust levels down. In terms of fastening I have the option of screws or cordless nailers. I probably will use a lot of pocket holes and glue to start out but may try more complex fastening techniques as my skill level increases.
