One more today:

I replace these from time to time just because they get gunked up and full of corrosion and deposits that you scrape off the terminals.  Today it's because I also bought this:

This is for my wife's car.  She heard me telling my friend that I replace batteries every three or four years whether they need it or not, as preventive maintenance, and she said, "But my battery is five years old."  And she's right.  I knew Subaru had given her a free battery when the car was still under warranty but I had kind of lost track of time and didn't realize it had been that long.  Any time I thought about it, it was "Oh, she got a new battery from Subaru, she's fine for a while."  Given that we've been in the single-digit temperatures for the last couple weeks, I am hustling to rectify this oversight.

The reality on batteries (As the guy who filled and charged them for a dozen years at a farm equipment dealership) is, they are most likely to die at two times during the year, usually in the spring when the weather warms up and stays nice for week and in the fall when there is a cold snap that lasts for a week or more. I can't offer a 100% explanation as to why it is then, but for years at those times I went from filling a few batteries a week to filling 5 or more in a day. I will tell you that the batteries they replaced consistently had a bad cell or two,

My theory (completely unproven or tested) is that with the seasonal temperature change comes some expansion and contraction. After a few years and who knows how many expansion and contractions a plate comes loose or a connection in a cell fails and you are now down a cell and a battery.

I wish I could get two years out of a battery, I always buy name brand, most recently Bosch and they always last 12-14 months MAX. Both cars I've ever owned. I always get the three year warranty and it always gets replaced two times under warranty.

I didn't realize they had any automotive parts until I ordered some new oxygen sensors for my truck. Was surprised to learn today that they make batteries as well.

They are a huge manufacturer of electrical and fuel components in the European market, lets just say for BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen they are comparable to Nippondenso  for Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

That's interesting.  I'm accustomed to battery failures happening on very cold days, but it's been ages since I actually had one fail on me in any season, because I don't let them go that long.  When it comes to batteries, the second to last thing I want happening is to be wandering around a parking lot looking for someone to give me a jump start; the LAST thing I would want would be for my wife to be in that situation.

What region of the country were you working in when you saw this pattern?

We had one customer I would see twice a year, I filled as many as five batteries in a day for each spring or fall. To be honest though, he had about a dozen tractors or loaders, 8 of which had 2 batteries and the rest one, The guy took good care of his equipment, it was just fall and spring when some of his batteries would die.

This is why I try to keep a small Schumacher SL1 jump pack in my truck, my luck it would be pouring down rain the time I need a jump or late at night with no one around.

I love my jump pack. Plus I don't mind offering help to others in the parking lot...literally 2 out of 3 times they'll give me money for beer and won't take no for an answer. It's already paid for itself.

I don't think there's anything Bosch doesn't make.  Being under 1% of the company is probably why their tool releases are so rare.

Bosch is the largest supplier of auto parts in the world and it accounts for 60% of their business. They are also a privately held company owned almost entirely by a charitable foundation that donates the vast majority of their earnings to charity.

Pretty interesting company when you dig into it.

As it turns out, though, the Bosch AGM batteries are made by Exide.  They're rebranded US-made Exide Edge batteries.  So we'll see how it does.  The buzz on AGM batteries in general is pretty good.

The family got a little bigger today. Not a fan of the engraving or the potential grinder or cheater bar marks but feels real solid like if you caught Ron Jeremy about to OD on Viagra so it'll do just fine.

Sweet ratchet. Is it 1/2 or 3/4 drive? I can't tell in the pictures, only looks huge compared to the other ratchets.

Awesome! But for the love of God flip that drive plug back around where it's supposed to be! I can't handle the plug and selector on the same side ?

Holy hell how did I not notice that. I was too caught up in the joy of a new ratchet. That's got to be fixed right now.
